Apple releases the Magic Mouse
Ivan | Wed, 2009-10-21 01:15It's great to see that Apple constantly innovates their input devices. They brought the mouse to the mainstream (by taking Xerox's design further) in the first place. Later they brought in the hockey puck design which was innovative in it's shape and design. Next, they came up with a simpler one button design, which was used by millions. The mighty mouse really broke new ground, but unfortunately the nipple broke too easily. Here is the history in detail.
Now the Magic mouse combines the best of the mouse and the trackpad into one input device. Hopefully this new design eliminated all the problems the previous designs had and we finally have the ultimate mouse. Well done Apple!

Sounds cool in theory, and of course time will tell. But right off the bat, holding the mouse in place and swiping with two fingers is difficult to do. And if you don't hold the mouse in place with the extra two fingers and thumb, your going to send your new mouse off the edge of your desk, or at the very least be chasing a runaway cursor all the time.
The touch click and touch scroll appear to be awesome, but I don't know about gestures with a mouse.

where is the button click for exposé and dashboard.
I may be wrong, but I assume it's the same 4 finger gesture as on the trackpad.

or talk to mouse... :]
maybe you are wrong... aparently this is not multitouch but the same late white macbook touchpad version, that recongnizes two finger gestures... :[
i think it's by far the most interesting thing apple has done with mice in... well... almost forever. apple's track record with mice is horrible, imnsvho.
conceptually, it's quite interesting and i'll be interested to play with one to see how well it functions. but due to their track record with mice, i'll withhold judgement until i've tried it.
Much as I dislike Gizmodo, they have confirmed my suspicion that the Magic Mouse is a disaster as far as comfort/ergonomics is concerned. Trying to hold it and swipe at the same time gives you cramps. Full review here.

i saw that last night, too. it does seem like an unnatural way to move your fingers. and after thinking about it, i suspect it could increase the carpal tunnel potential.
the hard thing is you can't touch the mouse even you really need.
all we need to be re-conditioned to make decisions whereaver and before act.
if you maintain more fingers on touchpad, nothing will happen if you move other finger.
if you unnecessary touch two fingers or one finger, will make menu appearances or select something.
I tested the mouse out quite a bit. It's great. I would highly recommend it. I have to mention that I only using mousing, scrolling 360 and right clicking. I don't use the two finger swipe, nor the screen zooming.
I just bought my Macbook Pro some weeks ago and still use mouse/tablet movements when I should use multitouch pad that is logical and easier.
We're mice conditioned yet and will take time to "move" to multitouch ambient.
I don't like battery powered mouses because they're so heavy and could fail when you can't go around to buy batteries.
I want Apple launch induction charged mouses :)))

Another Apple mouse failure.
Where's the steve ballmer guy? Apparently doesn't think that Windows 7 touch screen capabilities are superior to the Magic Mouse. lol As a designer, I prefer a traditional mouse to a touch screen for my daily tasks as the thought of pointing my finger all over the screen all day sounds tiring on the arm, not to mention all the damn finger prints all over the screen (which is one thing that I can live without on my 3G, but not badly enough to pay for the 3GS upgrade). I have high hopes for the Magic Mouse, when my Mighty Mouse's nipple refuses to work again, I may splurge for the Magic Mouse, but since I primarily use the mouse on my 24inch iMac, I would prefer it to be wired so I'm not changing batteries all the time (even if they are rechargeable, they still need to be changed). I don't generally use a mouse with my MacBook, though I do have a travel sized wireless Logitech if I need one. But I definitely want to wait until I hear some real world feedback about the Magic Mouse's functionality and ease of use before I drop $60, 65 on a mouse.
apples mouse designs SUCK. always have. the only even decent apple mouse was the single button wedge model from about 1992.
that round hockey puck was the most carpal-tunnel-inducing piece of horse crap ever.
the mighty mouse was anything but "mighty"
and this new "magic" thing sounds like its trying to be too many things at one time. and i still say they have the ergonomics all wrong and we will be hearing wrist and palm complaints before long.
about the only thing apple has ever really "innovated" is the iphone. historically, they buy stuff and just make it prettier.
viva the logitech mx revolution mouse!
wuwei - what the hell are you talking about?!?!??!
The design is nice, just like what Apple normally does. Great!
