I'm very curious about this

I'm very curious about this particular screen for photographers. Previous renditions of the glossy screen have been notoriously bad for color fidelity in photos. If this new model is as well, and since there's no option for a matte screen, I can see many photographers moving away from this line of laptops.

Good point

Hope to see some test results on this subject soon.

I'm just off to FL so I might pick one up...

As the dollar is down against the pound again could be good savings.

Wow. Aren't you the traveling dude, Kev...

I am so jealous! I went to FL last summer to visit a college friend and was in heaven hanging out on the beach the whole time. Especially since we're land locked here in Colorado. Ugh!

Have fun!

This cat is curious...

What part of Florida? I've been to Miami and Jupiter, but have always wanted to hit Key West where the infamous E.H. found his groove...

Me or Plugz?

If you're asking me, then I went to Marco Island and then we headed to South Beach (Miami) for a day/night, and then she took me over to St. Petersburg. I fell in love!!!

My aunt & uncle own a condo in Sarasota and always invite us there. Maybe now we'll actually be able to afford to take them up on it.

Either or...always like to learn of new spots to visit.
I had a great Aunt who lived in Sarasota and cousins who live in Clearwater. I've ever only been down on biz though. Perhaps next time for pleasure...

my wife and i were in key

my wife and i were in key west last november. we actually saved some $$ by renting a place in marathon key, which is about 45-50 minutes toward miami. it was a decent place, right on the water, with kitchen, LR, DR, and two bedrooms. then just a short drive to key west.

the time we were there before that it was just a stop on a cruise ship.

oddly, my mom and i lived in FL for 9 yrs when i was a kid (winter park) and somehow we never went to key west. too bad, i like key west.

Orlando and Tampa

Pure tourist-ville.
Going with a couple of friends and one of their 10 year olds.
It'll be Disney and Universal most of the time I expect.

First day here not done much other than the Islands of Adventure, have managed to grad some nice design ideas though surprisingly, I'm on a bit of a mission to find new marketing gimmicks for one of my clients and have found a few really good little souvenirs and ad boards that have a few good creative elements to borrow.

I've been noticing the new coca-cola branding too that Ivan posted about a while back. I'll be trying to capture as many examples as I can find.

I like the macbook, and the specs for the macbook pro are great, but I don't like the glossy screen of the macbook pro. I think the macbook is fine because the general buyers are average people. Macbook pros are often used by graphic designers, so I don't think the glossy screen was svery smart...

Are the glossy screens

Are the glossy screens inferior? In what way?

plugz's picture

Prefer glossy screens...

...always have.
All this fuss which, to be totally blunt is shit, is crap.
All screen were glossy until LCD panels came in. it doesn't matter what the coating if the panel itself is high enough quality.

Colour is always too rich on glossy's. It doesn't represent final print colours as well as a matte screen. I have a macbook pro with matt and a Acer with glossy - I love the gloss. It looks so nice for designing for web. Have to be a bit careful though when doing so for print!

that's just poor

that's just poor calibration. if you calibrate properly, they'll be just as close as a non-glossy screen.

don't get carried away with anecdotal evidence (just comparing two screens).

I've heard once you get used

I've heard once you get used to the glossy screen you never want to go back to matte.

I seriously doubt the glossy screen is going to scare off photographers, most of whom are used to seeing photographs on glossy paper, no?

i have a dell laptop with a glossy screen. i like it, but i also don't travel with it a lot and it's used mostly indoors. if i was in natural light situations a lot, it would become more annoying. the glare can be sucky. but since it gets used more in my living room (90+%) than anywhere else, it works very well there. the darker the room you're in, the nicer the screen looks.

well, the glossiness (which im assuming is glass) is probably easier to crack and break than matte. there wasnt any glass in the old macbook pro...

Hmmm

So there will be no 17 inch MacPro?
I guess stick with the old one, not fair apple!

Rolf's picture

Macbook = OK, MacbookPro = a real dissapointment

I am really dissapointed in the new MBP. At first because a matte screen is not available. A 'Pro' computer to me is all about having BTO options.

Secondly i really think Apple made a big mistake making the design similar to that of the regular Macbook. The aluminium casing is really nice but the iMac look simply does'nt work for me on a Pro computer. I also hate the black keyboard. Apart from the more sturdy aluminium case it looks just like an ordinary HP.
The 1000 bucks they want me to pay extra for the Pro at least should make me feel it also went in a more exclusive design. Now it makes you feel that it goes straight into Stevies pocket.
Come on Apple!
How can you expect us to buy a BMW 5 series when it looks the same as the 3 series?

They'll probably justify it by saying the uniform design is more eco friendly bla bla bla, but i think of its design as a marketing flaw that i hope they will not continue to make when they release the 17 inch version.

In my opinion the Pro should have been all aluminium with silver chiclet keys, and no black ugly iMac bezel around the screen.
And it should have more BTO options. At least a matte screen option.

I would get my hands on the previous model.

I have been hanging out to

I have been hanging out to see these machines, and when they first released them, I had similar impressions to the previous threads. i.e. why the black keys, and imac looking face? But loved the unibody aluminium case!

I must admit that I have already come round to these designs. I use an imac at work with the white keys and they always become slightly off white colour, so I am constantly cleaning my keyboard. Also, correct me if i'm wrong but all the new LCD display screens etc are all coming out with a black border around the screen, and although I like the previous silver craze for TVs, I have to admit that the black border is definately better for movies, photos and colour perception. As for gloss or matte, that should probably have been a choice.

Thumbs up from me. Can't wait to get one as soon as I can check out a display one first! :-)

plugz's picture

I went to check one out at the Florida Mall yesterday...

I almost bought one, had my credit card not been declined because I was trying to make a large purchase abroad (the shame!) I'd be typing this on one right now.

They are both very nice machines, I was going to plump for the 2.4 MacBook but as the dollar is gaining against the pound and now is 1.60 against 1.80 2 weeks ago and 2.10 last year, I may wait until get home and get one there.

I might even get a Pro
