OS X 10.7 aka Lion is available in the Mac App Store

Apple's latest and most modern operating system Lion is now available in the Mac App Store for $30. It's a 3.49 GB file so it will take a while to download even on fast broadband connections. It's advisable to make a complete backup of you system with Carbon Copy Cloner or similar apps, so you could go back if you experience is a catastrophic problem after installing Lion.

Have you made the jump? How does it compare to Snow Leopard? Any problems with the Adobe apps? Let us know in comments!

It's cool! A little strange feeling with "natural" scroll gesture...

Vimeo under Lion is broken. Doesn't play the video smooth. But everywhere else Flash video seems to work fine.

I just upgraded this morning and everything went super smooth.

The download was very fast for me, it took about 15-20 minutes to download the installer from the App Store. Before I ran the installer I opened the package up and burned a copy of the DMG file so if I ever need I can restore directly to Lion and not Snow Leopard. After that I ran the installer which did it's thing.

So far I really like the new scrolling. It takes some adjustment, but I'm coping with it well. I like how it unifies their touch devices and their traditional devices. I also believe this little learning curve will likely play out well in the future when their laptops and stationary machines inevitably get more touch features.

I hope Mission Control will prove to be useful it seems a bit like an extension of Expose. Launchpad is completely worthless to me, I can use Spotlight to launch apps and I have my Finder set up to start in the applications folder.

Speaking of Finder, people will surely complain but I like that they are starting to mask away good portions of the file system. The Library folders and system folders are hidden by default and I think this is better for your general user who struggles to grasp the concept of a file system hierarchy. Now they only see their app folder and various document folders. Less confusion for them. The nerds can enable the hidden folders in Terminal. One thing I dislike is the new all files view in Finder. I immediately removed it from the sidebar and changed the starting place to the Applications folder.

The gestures are a nice touch, but right now some of them seem a bit much to try and remember.

I think iCal is pretty damn ugly with this attempt to look like a paper calendar. Same can be said for Address Book. I really hope this is a short lived trend.

That's all I can think of for now.

As for Adobe apps, I was prompted to update a Java component on my first startup of Lion. I did and everything seems to be working fine. I only really use Photoshop though, version CS5. I also use Aperture and Photo Mechanic, both of which seem to be running fine.

All in all a very sold OS release, very smooth. I haven't had any bugs or incompatibility problems.

"I think this is better for your general user who struggles to grasp the concept of a file system hierarchy."

i think this is a screaming example of apple working to idiot-proof its experience. even at the cost of its long-standing army of professional users.

as evidenced with FCPX, in an effort to make things easier for jane-housewife, they have nearly crippled existing professional workflows. people who move complex and large file structures between machines on a fairly regular basis.

i dont think i should be punished just because you cant get your head around file organization.

As someone who is certified in Final Cut Pro I can say that I really don't have much of a problem with what Apple has gone and done with the application. It was very clear that Final Cut Pro needed to be rebuilt, it needed a new modern foundation and now it has it. That it's lacking some features or made some changes to how I managed my media really doesn't bother me. I'm capable of adapting, and most importantly I'm able of maintaining my current workflow if needs be while I wait for this new application to be further developed and receive the features it has lost. I don't have to have it immediately. It was very obvious what Final Cut Pro X was going to be. They showed it off at NAB and it was going around the internet. Any pro worth his paycheck should have seen hints on some of the sites or RSS feeds he follows. Unfortunately people have this I want it now mentality, and dived into something that might not have be ready for them and their work. Regardless of all that I think that rebuilding FCP shows Apple has a strong interest in continuing to develop it push it. It shows they are thinking 10 years down the road, so I'm at ease with it.

Having said that let's go back to Lion...

They only thing hidden is the Library folder in your user folder. I don't think your example really qualifies, even a pro doesn't need to go in there but once every four years and when he does he can do it just as easily as before. All he needs to do is unhide the folder.

At the end of the day these changes help professionals too. Let you not worry about nerdy programmer aspects and focus on your work. For example I love that Aperture manages your pictures for you. Let them go into a database and not worry about them. Spend your time editing and working. It's so much more elegant that digging through folders in Photo Mechanic trying to find a particular picture. So a future where applications start to manage files really doesn't scare me, even in a managed approach you can dictate aspects like setting FCPX to keep media files on an external.

It took me forever to download Lion. You'd have thought I was on dial up or something, so their servers must be pretty taxed right now.

The upgrade went fine - all my stuff is backed up with Time Machine.

I was just a bit confused with some of their subtle changes, like the scrolling direction. I need to just run through some intro tutorials to learn more about all the changes, but overall, it seems to be working great.

To expose the geek in me, however, my Diablo 2 and Warcraft 2 games are currently un-useable. I think I read somewhere that I can patch that, however, so I'll have to give it a try sometime. That's the one thing I dislike about OS updates is that they tend to disable older programs.
