OSX Tiger Font Issues ?

ReThink's picture

I have heard there are some issue's in Tiger with fonts. I am the only one (luckly me) that works on a Tiger machine in my work environment and have experienced recently that some fonts work fine on co-workers mac's that are using panther, but when they transfer the font over to me for some reason the font says it is damaged and is rendered usless. I've tried transfering the font various ways (via ethernet, and via server) and it comes through the same way.

Does anyone have any insight to this issue? Have anyone experienced issues with fonts in Tiger?

Always use a font utility...

I have struggled for years and years with fonts, from Font DA mover (system 6) through to suitcase - which always promised the world and never delivered, mainly due to font conflicts.

I have now seen the light and use Font Agent - not a single font issue in the last 6 months.

More information can be found here: http://www.insidersoftware.com/

Hope this helps.

re: Thanks for the tip

I've had the same issue's with Suitcase and have still used it for a long time. I have never tried font agent. I'll test it. Thanks...

Luckily

In older os and progs, smal font problems always passed. You could say bold even if in the chosen font there was no bold; And everything went just fine. Your desktop printer did'nt send you a warning, you just thought that everything was fine. And then...

You went to the printer and all kind of problems showed up. Your TrueType downloaded font had some hickupsn with hints and all your text shifted.

You downloaded another grungy typeface with all kinds of nifty features and never had a problem until... you went to press.

Nowadays even Tiger starts saying that things aren't OK. InDesign won't let you apply bold, when there is no bolod in the chosen font, and so on.

Luckily.

If the original font is a Type 1 font then the problem lies with Suitcase, if it is a Truetype... the problem iw with the font.

InDesign is right!!!

InDesign is right to not allow you to make a font bold, this happens in Quark and makes the text look horrible - not how the font should look when created as a borld VERSION of the original font...

What kind of fonts are they?

I haven't had any font problems with Tiger, but I mostly deal with TTF and OTF fonts. I use Linotype's FontExplorer X (free), which can identify but not repair damaged fonts... you need Suitcase, FontAgent Pro, or some other font utility to do that.

Font problems in Tiger

I hate it that Tiger won't let me use my old Postscript Type 1 fonts unless they are in suitcases. They seemed to work fine in Panther so why did Apple have to change things? Grrr! Avant Garde came with my LaserWriter Plus way back in 1986 and it's still a favourite. I've no idea how to put these fonts in suitcases. Grrr! again.
