Own business card - new logo etc

Hi, been checking out this site for a while and really respect everyone´s comments so I thought I´d ask for a critique on a logo idea I am working on. Its for myself. I have been working freelance for about a year and most of my clients are recommended - "Call Amanda Judson, she does graphic design" - etc. So, well I thought I use what most folks already know.

I like the initials - I am after something simple, but can´t figure out what I am doing with the "Amanda Judson Design" bit.

Since this is my first identity I´m fiddling and flapping around too much and could do with some guidance. Love it or hate it - I can´t wait to see your comments.

Very clean! Nice to see a clean layout with plenty of white space.

Just a few comments:

I would get rid of the word "Mobile" - you've only listed one phone number, so it really doesn't matter to anyone what KIND of phone it is.

I would get rid of the word "E-Mail" - everyone knows what an email address is

I would get rid of the word "Website" and the "www." in your Web address. Again, everyone knows what a Web address is, and everyone knows that you don't even need to type "www" anymore.

Also, have you considered using all lowercase (or even mixed case) letters on the back (or is that the front?) where it's just your name? I really dislike all caps, it's just jarring to the eye compared to the nice soothing logo type.

I like the "ajd". You've fit them together nicely.

I don't love the stacked name but of the three I like the far right one. In the first one, the "Amanda" looks small and the "Design" looks stretched. Maybe if you stacked it but in lowercase?

Also, the "J" in "Judson" doesn't look like it's lining up on the left side even though I'm sure it technically is. With a letter like the "J" you need to have it extend outside of the margin, especially on a thin "J" like this. In InDesign it's called "Optical Margin Alignment" but you might need to do some manual work to get it to work properly visually.

I'm not very fond of it. I like certain aspects, though. My overall complain is it seems too sterile. I love simplicity, don't get me wrong - but it almost seems like there is an element of design missing. I wish I could describe what I'm thinking of more, but even I'm not sure. I just think it needs another element, so it doesn't look like a logo dragged onto a template in it's appropriate places.

This is probably just my opinion, because I can definitely see where people are liking it because it "gets the point across" quickly.

I'm liking the side with the contact information more than the logo side, and I agree with JimD about taking out the redundant titles. I would also agree about making things not in all caps.

I hope that helps. I'll be thinking more about it to see if I can come up with some specifics.

Jim said ALOT of great comments. i agree with all of them. I'd try the same thing, go lowercase on the name. it'd probably compliment the logowork you've done.

all in all i like it, the simplicity, the white space, the logo. it's clean and to the point. nice job

Thanks to all of you for your comments which I have taken on board. Funny thing is I started with lowercase letters. I'm not a huge fan of stacking words either but its such a long name that I wasn't sure how I could handle it and keep the white space.

Thinking of having the "logo" embossed or laminated on my cards to add a bit of texture.

Need to play around with the back some as I have removed the mob, e-mail and www but now it looks unbalanced???

That might be what I was thinking of. Great idea. :)

be careful of what's on the back once it's embossed. it's a GREAT idea, and would really make the card "pop" with that extra little something. being double sided it'd be something to watch out for the back typography in the embossed area.

maybe bring the info into the front, and simplify it down like jim said, by getting rid of the "mobile" and "web" text...

you have a great logo going and a nice simple style. seems your ontop of it and working out the fine tuning just nicely. keep us posted.

I agree with seraphim... the mark is certainly simple and clean but it lacks any sense of design. The challenge would be to add an element of interest and personality without going overboard. [Anyone can type three initials. It doesn't say anything about you. Show off some creativity]

I'm not a fan of incorporating the "d" into the initals as it's basically tack on information. You said it yourself, "Call Amanda Judson". [ visually AJ Design ]

Play with different letter combinations of "aj". Being this is your first identity here are a couple of quick concepts to springboard thought for creating a unique mark. Fill up a sheet with 20 ideas in 30 minutes.

I'd also suggest changing to a different typeface for the detail information. Eras just isn't a very interesting font. The placement and size of the typography also needs improvement.

I'd avoid switching from a vertical to horizontal layout because it creates an awkwardness when turning the card from the front to back.

I love the white space and small text-- I do not like the typeface for the "ajd" logo. I think it's too heavy in comparison to the rest or something. Something is just awkward about it, I don't know.

I like the cleanliness of the card.

However, the 'ajd' at the top overpowers the delicate and minimalist use of white space on the rest of the card; the typeface is also jarring. It doesn't seem to be a very modern font, although the design of your card is.

I also agree with the comments here that the 'd' in 'ajd' is off-putting, as your initials are A.J. It makes me think that Judson is your middle name or something, just confusing to figure out at first.

Finally, what do you design? Some more information on what you do might be helpful.

Otherwise, it's a pretty card.
