walks_in2_trees (252 points) | Sat, 2007-01-20 05:01just curious about how you all view pen tablets...
I have one and I don't know how I lived without it
how is yours set up?
Do you have any unconventional uses for it?

I have a 4x6 graphite on my PC a 6x8 on my macbook pro and a intous 9x12 on my dual G5...
I am the same the mouse is barely used and I am almost a clod in my usage of mice now.

I used to have one, a very small one—the Wacom 4x5 tablet. Although I loved it (because I use it with Painter, too), it was just TOO small. I got rid of it and am in the market for a larger one, at least 6x8, but unfortunately they're just too expensive—the decent ones, at least. I've tried eBay, but still too high.
When I was in school, I used to intern at a graphic design studio and the senior designer used a Wacom 4x5 tablet in lieu of a mouse. It was odd watching him use it for EVERYTHING, but he said he couldn't do anything with a regular traditional mouse. I can totally see that.
I am left handed and use my pro mouse on the right side, like everybody else. But when I am doing intricate detailed design work or working in Painter (more for fun, actually), I really need something on my left side like a tablet.
I think if you're lucky enough to afford a really good one, then that's awesome! I'm still looking.

tools of your trade and other stuff like that is part of the cost of doing business and should get passed onto your customers... I realize that you need the money first in order to buy it up front, but it will let you do more natural looking drawings which at times is what the customers need, and it will let you do some things faster too.
a carpenter can't be a carpenter without a hammer, saw, and ruler, so a carpenter buys them or goes hungry, but give the carpenter a powersaw, cordless screwgun/drill and (s)he can build posh homes in Bergen County, NJ for which he can charge millions of dollars.
my tablet I got as part of a package deal when I bought Corel Draw 12

Actually, I use mine in combo with the mouse. Since I use it on a PC, I have the mousewheel with which to change magnification, and even though the tablet came with it's own mouse, I don't like it because it's movement is limited to the tablet... if I go off of the tablet's sensitive area the pointer stops dead and it takes me a moment to realize why and it's even worse if I switch it's behavior to match the way the pen works, because my brain tends to forget that little detail because traditional mouse behavior is so ingrained into my brain

Love the Cintiq, but barely afford one. I'm in the middle of building my own 15" Pen Tablet. Powered by Intuos3. This is also why I'm searching for an apps that can swap screen between multiple display.

my Graphics Card driver (PC) allows me to either drag a window across desktops or I can specify which programs I would like to have open on Display #2 in the "advanced" display options. However, since my 2nd display was a television (non HD), it wasn't very useful for much except playing full motion games and I gave up on the 2 display setup.
