Personal Portfolio Site
matthew (60 pencils) | Thu, 2005-06-16 14:42I recently began to put together my online potfolio because I have been needing one and I thought I might send it out and see what kind of offers I can get. There is one catch though, I need some C&C before I ever think about submitting this to anyone. So who better to ask then a whole community of professionals? :)
None of the links work yet, I just want my basic look setup. Its valid xhtml/css2 using sIRF for nice fonts.

Overall its a nice start, but the menu and the footer dont really work with the res of the page for me. Having the first character of your menu links feels a little tacky for me. You're better off just having them in Caps at the same size as the first character with some subtle letter spacing too. Also you might want to repeat the header shape with your menu, as the menu just feels like its been plonked there ;) . Same with the footer, it feels a little chunky... perhaps you could do without the grey background and just put a simple 1px solid #999 line as the start of your footer.
Hope thats helped,
- Ben

The edges of the decor above the menu and the red area in the header are not sharp.
I'm not sure about the thick black lines and the background pattern.
Ivan: I was wondering about the graphics, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me at first. I have both designs in vector format so I will have to practice saving stuff for web. I also didn't like the black borders at first but the contrast kind of grew on me. Maybe a repeated SLIGHT drop shadow would be better though? More suble for sure.
Ben: indeed I think I went overboard with the small-caps function ;) I will heed your advice on just going pure caps on the links. I was still in limbo with what I was going to do with the bottom of the links bar, I am thinking of trying to round it off some like I did with the MJ section of the banner to see how it comes out, otherwise I probably will just repeat the h1 shape on the top like you said. The idea on just a smooth line to seperate the footer sounds like it would be clean and smooth, I think I will try that as well, maybe add a deco line if its not to much with the links.
Thanks for the helpful input.
