photographer business card
stlphotog (12 points) | Sun, 2009-11-08 21:29I am a photographer and have been working hard on a new business card. I wanted to say 'photography' without saying photography ie: no camera icons or anything like that. My hope is that the aperture circles convey that message while still displaying a sense of design and creativity.
Why the circles? In addition to the main reason above, I also tend to have a very geometric eye when it comes to my composition. Additionally, while I don't want to specifically be labeled as a concert photographer, I do make a significant portion of my income shooting shows. So, if the circles bring to mind records...it's not far off.
I've always been into design and come to this site often for inspiration. Any ideas, criticism, or feedback would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

I like it, though I do think your photography card should say something about photography. This would be a good card for a designer. But well, that's your choice. As far as the design, I like it. The white circles within the black circles might be blended out better though, evenly increasing factor. And perhaps do a bit work on the font. It's reading like pnotography, and it's sort of 'put there because there was no other place'
but I really like your design =)

I like the idea. I would like to see another round. Maybe different size circles or maybe tone back the circles to make a vignette. Some of the things I noticed up front:
- Your small dots are going to fill in on press.
- 2nd row in from the left 2.5 down, the circle is odd.
- The color causes the web site to be lost
I was so ready to hate this one at the preview size, but it's interesting at full size. The idea looks good, but the execution lags. I'm guessing the dots are supposed to represent different aperture settings - so why not cut back on the pin holes and have totally open ones on the other end - either a linear pattern or a radial? The typography needs work too - the name is too close to "photography" and the contact info is too small. You have more room to work there, so use it. But be careful with the trim - patterns like this can be tricky when they're cut down. "Photography" is too close to the edge also - keep a 1/8" safety. Nice choice of fonts - I can see the 60s op art look you're trying to achieve.
All in all though - an interesting and promising concept. Keep at it.
Thank you so much everyone who has responded so far! Ok...I've opened most of the apertures to make more of a progression and enlarged the contact info. It's now at 8 pt. Is there any other way to handle email addresses and web sites? My email is just my name@mywebsite and I don't know if they look weird stacked on top of each other. I also disconnected the 2 h's to hopefully make the text easier to read. Any other suggestions?
Ouch, this card seems kinda like those optical illusions. That could be good, that could be bad. Have you tried a subtle row of circles from left to right, with varying "apertures?" Seems to me that would open up lots of space for the text. Then maybe throw in on of the more open circles for your name? I dunno, I'm just throwing ideas out there.
I like the concept, but the execution not so much.

One big problem I'm seeing is that the black is an oval and the white in the middle is a circle, it makes them look wonky. I like the concept, I think that it could work better if you enlarged them, cutting off some rows and phases.
I think the "ovals" are an optical illusion...

idk, I deeefinitely think some of them are ovals- or that the circles just aren't aligned correctly?
I can see "Bossa Nova" (New Trend) feeling but still looks "heavy"
Maybe you could abandon this huge "entire" pattern and make spaced lines with some apperture samples falling like rain.
that repetitions principally at margin causes the stress to viewers
yes I'm brazilian xD
Feeling groovy.
Nice start, but still needs some refining. As stated above, use up some space...try enlarging your name and replace the "o"s in CONRAD and PHOTOGRAPHY with your vinyls/apertures.

I'm totally digging the idea, myself. An optical illusion would be interesting for me - a selling point for the design as opposed to being a negative. But it still needs tweaking. The main "problem" I see is it needs a larger name - maybe go up in one weight size for first and last name too (as long as you don't loose the "look"). "Photography" can be smaller imo if that helps. Then the rest is simply rearranging the pieces. Swapping the website with the email would help the text shape fit the circle better. All the apertures have to be perfect circles for this to work. Do it by measurement if necessary. But the pattern itself can be spread or squeezed in some if it helps (I'd like to see the edges more symmetrical). And the white opening for the info can be reduced, enlarged, moved left some, whatever... to make it work. Larger would be my suggestion - then you can go up a point on the contact info too. See what I'm saying? Just move the pieces around on the board until it works.
Make the main circle larger to give yourself more room. I would also do a fade to make the background apertures less in your face. I assume the different sizes are to suggest apertures of a lens. Perhaps use the inside as an octagon or mire to suggest blades. The smallest ones are too small so lose that size.
Oh! OH!I have a great idea! DO it like James Bond! Except instead of James Bond, it's YOU! You know what I'm talking about right??
