This is just to let you guys know that SXC is back online. It is probably the best place on the net for free stock photos, so check out their latest version at sxc.hu.
(BTW, downloads are currently disabled)

So this is going to be 100% free? It does not sound like from the terms of use..
From the terms of use:
All images and their descriptions and presentation in general on this Website ("Images") are the property of SXC and its members and are protected by international copyright laws. Use of these Images without license is prohibited.
The site contains images both with and without a visible watermark. SXC grants You a limited license to download low resolution watermarked images to test if they suit your purposes, but You are not allowed to use them in any final material. You must download and replace these images with their non-watermarked high resolution version in the final work. Use of non-watermarked images are governed by the Image license agreement.

You can download and use the pictures, but the images stay the property of the guy who made them. Some people who post there ask that you ask permission from them before using the pix for commercial uses. See the ILA.
Uh, free to use for........Non-Commercial work, useless.
Thanks Jonathan for the quote!
What the TOS means is, we can sue you if you use this for anything that is related to commercial. Keep in mind you web site of family pictures that also has Google ad words or any other ad can be constituted as "commercial". So if you want to ujse these images for anything other than your desktop image (on you home computer)...enjoy.
One last thing.....the images may be cheap to use, and could be a great source of stock photography, just don't use them without permission.
Anyone get any $ for commercial use?
I used to use SXC but found that iStockPhoto.com has a vastly better library (and can be used for commercial too).
And the cool thing is that its onlly a couple or so $ for a biggish image.... I use all the time.
Cheers for the heads up though mackie!

My understanding is that you now do not have permission to download the photos and use them for templates or in any kind of way that may qualify as redistribution, but otherwise you should be allowed to use them for commercial work I guess. Otherwise the whole site would make no sense. Who needs thousands of desktop images?
The quote above means that you can use the watermarked small images only for comping purposes (as on any other stock site) but they can't be used in the final product.
This does not affect the high resolution photos, they can be used for any type of commercial work free of charge. (Sometimes you have to ask permission but that's the way it goes.)
As for templates, we changed the rules. Because not everyone likes them users should ask permission first. For other purposes the rules are pretty much the same as before.
Mackie, thank you very much for the post! :)
The MAN behind sxc.hu! Thank you for checking in and giving us a clarification. Congrats on the new version of the site. It's stunning.
I like this site, I used it to find images for a class project last semester which turned out great. I didn't know it was down. From the image in the post I got the impression that they underwent a visual redesign (not that there's anything wrong with it as-is), but I guess it's just a feature upgrade.
why does it look the same? ANd can't remember when I am logged in ?? Still a very nice and cool site. Many thank yous for it
