Make an image look digital

An image on a computer is built up by pixels, normally they're so small so we don't see them until we zoom real close, but they are there. Here's a cool trick if you want show the pixels more and perhaps create an transition from normal on one side and pixels on the otherside.. Kind of an effect that show the image is digital.

I'll explain how you can acheive that effect below:

1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop

2. Duplicate the image by pressing CMD-J or do go to the layers window and right-click on the layer and choose duplicate.

3. Now you got two copies of the image.. Goto Filter >> Pixelate >> Mosaic

4. Now you've got the mosaic window up.. You'll see a slidebar in here in order to increase or decrease the level of square size..

5. Choose a size and press OK.. Now you've got one layer with the orginal and one layer which is full of pixels..

6. Time todo the trick.. Press the layer mask button in the layer window at the bottom of the window and you'll now see it's empty..

7. Now goto to Gradient tool in the toolbox and choose to use the gradient black/white usually is 3rd from the left on the top..

8. Now you've gotta use the tool.. Just simply drag it from the side and volá one side is digital pixelated and one is looking normal..

I choosed todo this effect on a girls face.. But it's only your imagination that stops you!

Great tip!

If you're inclined to add a few steps, you can actually create several of these pixillated layers at progressively-'worse' levels of quality and then step the gradients, so that it actually appears that the pixel blocks shift in size.

Thanks Tigerstorm & Korteenea,

When I submit photos to a client, I usually include a low res CD/DVD that includes a web preview of the photos. Korteenea's trick is exactly what I do for the disc label image.

Now that I´m in this crazy photo class this will be a good trick to use when presenting the cd labels and jewel box covers... I guess creativity goes along with this....
