I've turned computer off and on, shut photoshop down. I can bring text in from word and it turns the text to caps. The caps lock is not on. I've clicked it on and off.

Photoshop retains all the character styles from the last time you used it (which I hate, btw). So anytime you use text in the program you should check all the settings and style buttons on the character menu to see which ones are still in effect.
