plan for postcard contest
agtalpai (57 points) | Mon, 2005-04-18 07:27hi, this has been made for a postcard contest, and i used ai.
i had a buch of fun redrawing some the landmarks of my hometown, Szeged, coz i've never used illustrator before, except for text touchups made in pdf files.
i uploaded the image beacause i don't feel it's finished yet... i don't feel any breakthrough "kraft" in it.
can you suggest me anything?

Nice one! There is a need for very different cards to cater every taste of the tourists from around the world. This one is doing it for me.
I would work on the type. Full caps don't look that great. Maybe try them bolder?
If there are more buildings you could populate the card more. Now it looks like there are only like 5 buildings in the city. Maybe just a generic sky scape as a third layer behind the exising two.
BTW, I enabled the attachements for the critiques, but I didn't explain what they are for. You don't need to select your image twice, the attachement is just there in case you want to include a supplementary material. Like a second version or a pdf of the same...
So basically the main thing to upload is the image that should be in jpeg format, but the attachment can be in any format.
wow, thanks!
i was thinking on the type and the buildings too, but i have not found the fonts i was looking for in my collection. originaly i chose Helvetica, beacause it has a bit "slick" feel besides it's a really well-designed and elegant sans.

I really like it! The only thing I would add is I might bump the gray cathedral in the background to the right (or left) just slightly to avoid the tangents that are created where the smaller triangular points of the main spires (specifically the ones on the right hand side of each spire) intersect too closely with the yellow rays in the bkg. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work!
it seems like there is hardly anything on the postcard. I think the buildings are too big, i would make them smaller and i would use some kinda browns to that yellow lights or just use the shades of grey.
And the typography i would completely redo and rethink.
There was a recent work of mine that's similar in some kinda way (you may have to wait some seconds till the background image loads). That's it!
I agree with more buildings, different font, and try making the gray buildings a bit darker.
P.S. I have an illustration that I made that has the same gold sunshine things (i'm going to post it this afternoon maybe), but this really reminded me of it.
I don't like the black fronts of the buildings
It looks nice..
Got some ideas though.. How about creating silhouettes on the gray buildings in black and the black buildings in the gray?
But I dunno it maybe me that's wrong (it's almost 2.30 am while I'm writing this) LOL
