Please provide me some feedback. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm about to graduate and looking to see what direction I take within the Advertising field. I was wondering if any advertising account planners, or those holding any other positions in the advertising world out there, would be so kind as to answering the following questions. Your answers would help me greatly. I know I can google this and obtain a wealth of information. Nonetheless, I would still be interested in reading your responses, as they will give me some insight. Here are some simple questions:

Did you acquire any college degrees? If so, what was your major?

What was your first job in the field? How did you get it?

Are you aiming toward any particular career path? Or have you reached your goal in terms of career development?

What is a typical day on the job like?

What would you say is the most challenging task you have had to face on the job?

What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone starting in the field?

Thank you for your time and effort.

Well kinda, yeah. That, plus I'm not in "the advertising world" except to the extent we all are. (!?!)

But you go ahead and answer all those "simple" questions, if you have the time -- for a total stranger who doesn't even want to bother Googling the subject, and who has professors who should have been guiding her to obtain the needed insight all along, perhaps by arranging for a student internship at an ad agency.

Grumble grumble old lady grumble....

....sorry had to do it! I have been waiting all day for the opportunity to do that.
I don't have the answers to your questions. :(

There's nothing wrong with your questions. In fact, I think it smart of you to ask. The problem is that most everyone here at CreativeBits fall under the "CREATIVE" side of the ad business, not the account service or planning side. Right questions, wrong place.

Did you acquire any college degrees? If so, what was your major?
Graphic Design diploma. Photography was my major.

What was your first job in the field? How did you get it?
My first job was as a paste up artist at the Shelburne Free Press and Economist, a small rural paper that output 7 weekly newspapers.
Method of obtainment: Upon earning my degree, I went to my local government-operated HR office, saw the position on the job board and applied. I went to the appointment, was interviewed by an "interesting" individual named Venus, and was called in the next day to start.

Are you aiming toward any particular career path? Or have you reached your goal in terms of career development?
I've never really adhered to a career path.
My career goal is not related to the design or advertising industry.

What is a typical day on the job like?
Deadline city, flying by the seat of your pants, thankful that your mind operates better when the STRESS button is being hammered. Overall....fun. I'd rather be doing this than shovelling shit.

What would you say is the most challenging task you have had to face on the job?
Learning Dreamweaver. I have no discipline to sit down and teach myself coding so I have enroled in a course which begins January 2009. I have to jump back on that turnip truck before it rounds the next corner.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone starting in the field?
Walk into it with your eyes wide open, treat others as you would like to be treated, and try not to succumb to the "dark side" of this biz.

no need to get pissy...

there's been a lot of newbie action on CB lately... are you all in the same study group or something?

well here goes...

no degree

I started in priting prepress hoping to transition to graphic arts

no my carreer path didn't go that way as directly as I would have preferred

typical day is frantic, pour me more coffee please?

most challenging is dealing with uncooperative bosses, cstomers, coworkers and equipment. the rest is easy

advice:
- read and post on CB!!
- if you go corporate, wear a smile on your dagger
- read up on marketing
