Portfolio Book

Hey everyone, I just signed up for this site and am looking for some feedback. I am working on a tiny portfolio preview book to send out to people. I am a rather small person, and I want to play off the idea that just because I am small doesnt mean I cant make an impact in the design world someday. I found an interesting quote to use on the cover. Im still working on the inside of the book which is going to explore the relationship between big and small through my use of type and images. I wanted to get you're opinions. Thanks!

Text readability

The white text against the bright green is very difficult to read for me.

Edit: Yeah, the blue background is a lot easier to read against.

Blue

All right, Ill stick with that. Thanks.

small should be big

overall nice job!

i'm no typography expert, but IMHO the words "small" and a few others should be bigger, so when you squint your eyes it reads ...SMALL...IMPACT...BED WITH MOSQUITO... so that people get the idea without having to read the whole thing.

I like that you made the title really big, though I'm not crazy about the apostrophes, they're a bit distracting. Do you know the author of the quote? It'd probably be better to actually quote him/her and leave out the "quote not included". I do like the quote, I think you have a good concept.

I like the top part, but the bottom part doesn't do it for me, I would take the bottom part off-- less is more.

Those big APOSTROPHES are not even grammatically correct. You should be using quotation marks ( " ). Two little lines, not one, see? Not to mention, I believe most of the time one should be pointing up and the other pointing down if you would be using the apostrophe rather than the quote mark. The apostrophe type quote is a style of quote within a quote...

Grammar

Misuse of quotes (single, double and don't get me started on inch marks) is probably the most common mistake in layout and design.

But there's another here. Minor, and maybe not worth mentioning, but... :)

"Self Promotion," since it is the title of a booklet promoting you, should read "Self-Promotional," and should be hyphenated because it is a compound modifier.

Grammer

Thanks for the grammar advice, that is definetely not one of my best strengths ;) Im going to rework the cover a bit and repost later tonight.

Using giant apostrophes in

Using giant apostrophes in place of quotation marks could be a design choice, or perhaps this designer is British. Their rules are different, you know. In either case, however, the closing mark needs to be inverted, tail down.

I think "self-promotion booklet" is okay, but the hyphen is indeed critical, as thornysarus points out. If this throws off your justification, find an artsy way to incorporate it. This will be especially important if you plan to appeal to editors or publishers. It might be less of an issue if you're targeting purely visual clients, or the proudly uneducated, as many CEOs appear to be these days!

By the way, I think this is pretty cute. If I got it in the mail, I'd read it.

One of the best fund-raising campaigns Ii ever did was for a tiny post-graduate school with an excellent reputation in its field. On the outside of the smallest-possible regulation envelope, I had a pen-and-ink drawing of the school's famous facade and across the bottom, the words, "Sometimes to be GREAT, you have to THINK SMALL." I asked for small first-time donations. It was a huge success. So I think you're on the right track

Good detective!

Then I stand only by the possibility that the "misquotes" are a design thing. It could irritate a lot of editor types, so certainly, it comes under the heading of taking risks for art's sake. Ahem.

Yeh

Yeh, Im from Minnesota, and while I didnt really understand the quotes thing, I did it just because it looked kind of cool to me. :) Ill flip the end one around however.

Ah well,

if you're from Minnesota, you'll appreciate how sensible it usually is to Do the Right Thing.

Overall good concept...

Overall good concept, just needs a little more work... Agree from above in that the quotes should be fixed for grammar purposes but the oversized approach does help to enhance the design concept.
