Portfolio Branding

As a result of recent discussions here, touching on people's personal web presence - ancient and up-to-date, I decided to re-initiate the process of branding myself - as it has historically fallen by the wayside - as always, to be left as a second priority behind the everyday work that i do for other people.

I have begun to not be able to see the wood for trees on this one, but after sleeping on it, decided on the two that I present here - and paradoxically, don't think that I need to explain the mark any more than the context as outlined above, although any questions are welcome.

I have been through the usual emotions and thought processes, questioning my ability to gauge between cliche, clarity and relevance, and well, thought that i'd just throw it out here. So here it is. Your honest thoughts and criticisms are valued and very much appreciated.

i generally quite enjoy supertight kerning. but in this case i think it introduces too much ambiguity. at first (and repeated) glance, i read adkill.

im not really feeling the icon either. looks like an at&t ad or a tornado.

i wanted to like it. but i just cant get behind it. sorry.

every logo I expect to don't make too much redundancy or make it more affordable to our eyes (that 'Bird' case IHA)

in this case you can see your unconscious connection between the "ill" and the signal bar.

you can explore it deleting the signal and bringing to your name, but please use san serif to don't 'kill' typography lovers. xD

you need to verify the success of the signal bar concept but this is an alternative for you.

yes I'm brazilian xD

Agree with qwerty on the signal bar. The top one looks like the first step towards something - I think the signal bar needs to somehow be incorporated AS the "ill" (or "kill" somehow).

The kerning is too tight. The "ask" also looks much tighter than the "kill".

I'm not sure I understand it, I'm thinking of a telecommunications or electronic reference because of the bars. Feels like signal strength/ battery life to me. It would be cool if you simplified the font into its own style to resemble your bars but read your name as suggested above (well, mine is the other extreme).

I thought the letters were all legible even being kerned together, but a little space between them might be worth trying. At least on the S which looks like it's being squeezed. The balance looks good. If that logo is cellphone signal bars, that seems more suitable for a phone company or networking business rather than a brand designer.

PS: What is going on with the captchas here?

I read "asskill" the first time. And I know that's not what you want ; )

I think it is because the s is so squished in there. The s just looks awkward. It doesn't flow into the other letters as fluidly as the "k" "i" "l" "l" does. Maybe if you worked on that - remove the serif on the s, modify the left side to flow into the "a" better.

Nice tornado

Maybe brand yourself with a hot iron next time, always works for me.

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments. Straight after posting, I saw the thumb on the preview page, and +1 to Art D; I could see that the kerning was indeed too tight, and the 'ask' - looked like a separate conglomerated entity to the 'kill'. I'm glad that my name isn't Asskill too - that would be unfortunate - and I certainly don't want anything else negative to be deciphered from my already weird surname - adkill especially; +1 to wgzn. I kinda think it looks like an '8' being smothered by the two letters either side - either way - i'll look at the kerning.

Ronaldo - thanks for your input - I take it all on board, and I am generally of the same opinion when it comes to serif fonts, but think that they have their place when used wisely. I played with the 'ill' as the signal bar thing too, but it wasn't really working. I'll scrap the signal bar though with pleasure.

It's interesting that so many of you got 'telecommunications', 'signal bar' 'AT&T' and 'cyclone/tornado' from the bars, and these weren't my aim. The bars were more of a symbol to represent an amplified message - an articulation - a resonating communication - and i'm glad that you pointed it out and didn't give much explanation on the posting for that very reason.

Anyway - i'll cut my babbling short, thanks very much again to everyone - including those not personally mentioned above, and i'll re-post very soon.
