Possible Album Cover
vinnylo (119 points) | Thu, 2009-05-21 11:15This I designed for an album cover for the hip hop group Fresh Guac. I tried something different here. I created this by usingmultiple colors and adding gaussian blurs to them in very specific spots in the design. This took me about 2 hours to complete the text. I hope you guys enjoy this.
p.s.
the sad thing is is that after the group seen it, they told me they didn't like it and never even mentioned about it looking good and what not. But that is part of being a designer I guess.

wow, well, im just glad it's not a logo for an avacado farm!
I think it's got to be more interesting. It doesnt say "Hip Hop" or even "Music" to me at all..
How about playing around with photography? Find some big heavy link chain, double it up, and spell out the band's name on the road in the ghetto. Get a nice shot of the chain on the road, and the band off in the dark distance drinking a 40 on a stoop.
That would say "hip hop" to me.

Why stop there? Make sure they're smoking blunts and loading their guns, have one or two of them cashing welfare checks too!
Yeah man, I think that idea is just a tad bit racially stereotypical.

I'm white and I drink 40's.. who said anything about race?

Come on man. A hip-hop group, chains, the ghetto, and drinking 40's.
I'm not saying it was meant to be "racist" but it's not surprising for it to be interpreted as such. Best not to go that route because it could be a touchy subject for a lot of people.
Aside from all that drinking a 40 on the stoop is so 1992 it's not even funny. You might as well have them wearing Cross Colors and Raiders caps.

well, i stoop it up all the time with a 40 of Old E.
Its where my creativity flows freely.

this looks far more "jazz" than "hip hop." i'm not surprised they weren't happy with it.
the text effects were well executed, but i don't think they really apply to the design problem.
the hip hop group bases all of their beats off of jazz music. Album covers dont neccesarily have to scream "hip hop" IMO. i am in the works with something totally different. I want to put all of the group on the cover but when i did the photoshoot the DJ never showed up. so now i'm in limbo with what i am going to do! AAHHHH!!! well thanks for the input guys!!!
I find it corny to be honest.
The logo is too big(I've made that mistake too). The tension is crazy with Fresh Gauc.
The bottom line looks totally out of place, and nothing ties the design together. The movement isn't great either.
Way too many effects on the text, as well as the reflection effect. Is this for print or a PDF that accompanies the MP3s? I know you took a while on the text effects but I would ditch them anyway.
I'd start over from scratch if I were you.

The main problem with the effects is that you have about 200 light sources. The overall impact is just junky when you do that.
The impression I get is that you were trying to go for a 1950s Wurlitzer jukebox look, maybe. Not a terrible idea for a jazz-based group, but like the others here, I don't get hip hop out of this at all. It could even be for a line of 2.0 hair products.
Have you talked to the group about how they want to be perceived?

Work more on this. It's not appealing. With an album cover you have to capture the style of a subculture.
Have a big sledge hammer, or a guitar, swinging down to splat an avocado... GregSauce was on the right route.
Keep it simple, yet eye-catching. Roughly write, even hand-write, the name of the band on the handle of the hammer...or whatever else springs to mind.
