post production...what to buy ?

hey guys,

I am a graphic designer and have played about a bit with post production stuff, eg final cut and after effects and would like to move more that direction (but still have a lot to learn). Want to update my mac but not sure what to buy, as I want it to go freelance in the future within this area. I have been looking at a 17inch superdrive powerbooks with zooped up 1GB RAM and 100GB hard drive, or a g5 but then I have a space problem (as in storing it). Will a 17inch laptop be laughed out of an edit suite for not being professional enough ? Also I take it I can firewire it up to a beta recorder or DVcam to get my work off ? and also will this spec be higher enough to handle this, or do I need to up it to 2GB ?

Any advice would be great....cheers !

not sure about snobbism level in yr part of the world, so cannot comment if u'll be laughed at or not, but over here computers are kinda just "shells" - anyways be it g5 or g4 laptop an array of external FW hard drives are connected, external FW->video converter boxes ... else, either way you should consider external TV monitor, but that kinda depends on the work you do ... at the beginning don't go over the top and leave beta recorder/beta transffers to pros and/or later date if it is not particularly required for yr work ...
g5 for sure is much more modern machine - system bus, max ram, and much better graphix card, but lots of work can be done on g4 powerbook as well ... depends on the work and deadlines, workload, etc ...
and i'd say that since you even consider 2gb ram (i mean, probably COULD afford), go for it ...

so, here you go - i probably added more to confussion than cleared questions :)
i don't wanna be the one who'd say "yeah, go with g5" ... or "sure, g4 powerbook is enough" ...
