Printing your designed work

For years, we had problems finding printers who could print more than just 4 color prints. No matter what we designed, getting on the paper stock and make it look like close to what we wanted was a tremendous task. Finally we've found a printer who offers a lot more services, paper stocks and coating options online, and do a great job at it as well.

Papers as thick as 16 point, or linen, colors like metallic and silver and coatings such as UV spoting are offered online with a click at very reasonable prices. I talked to a couple of their designers who are very competent and ready to help. Having designers involved in their print process is one of their smart ideas and the help to a designer invaluable. I think they are the only printer who take the designer's work more seriously than just consumer/small business printing.

I am not sure if I can divulge the name on the site, but if anyone is interested or Creativebits allows, I will be more than happy to share their website.

mara06, I really did not understand your message if it's not offensive. If it is, then I am truly disappointed that this site allows people like you to participate. That would definitely make me go away and leave it to you nonprofessionals.

But since you asked in your own way, the printer is wymprint.com

We're a little annoyed of spammers. At least I am. Sorry if you're not one of them.

Oh, that's what the comment meant. Now I get it. What an interesting way of showing. Nope not a spammer, just sharing my experience with online printers and my findings.

I thought it was spam too - especially because the subject line was somewhat ambiguous. Actually looks like it could be a valuable resource however - thanks.

Forgive me if you are not a spammer. You behaved exactly like others we've had here: registering, then immediately bragging about some printer who does work beyond belief, 'bye.

It might be a nice thing for you to introduce yourself and get involved in a few conversations to establish yourself as a member of the community. Many of us do share URLs for resources we've discovered. These recs carry more weight because we know and trust each other.

That said, welcome!

ps: I checked out wymprint.com and found their listed prices, with shipping included, to be a little higher than the place I use, comparing apples to apples, even before I take my broker's discount. They might have services you find valuable that would warrant the additional price. I didn 't see that they offer a broker's program of any kind. You might want to look into that. Some places understandably keep that kind of info off their Web site.

Reading you initial post I guess you are in the US.
Despite being a printer myself, I realize that I cannot offer a lot of specialised stuff. So I'm not going to go down the 'if you are in the UK give us a go' kind of route. Instead I'm going to shoot my foot and advertise a competitor company.

If you are in the UK and you are looking for specialist products such as glow in the dark printing, spot UV and die cutting, try RCS PLC they are not cheap but their quality is superb.

Mara,
Getting a pointer from you, I went to my local print shop and asked if they have a broker program. I like their work, but their prices and turn around time is always a problem. After interviewing me on the nature of the print, and how much of print job I can provide them, they offered me a 10% discount from retail! No matter how low they go, I still find the online printers to be much lower, especially my new find. If you know a printer who can provide it lower, I would love to give them my business.

Please advise.

If you aren't a spammer, or if you aren't selling this printer's services, then what is your point exactly?

Natobasso,

Let me spell it out for you. I am looking for a printer, local or online to print my requirements in the highest quality, time frame and low prices. Got it?

Mara apparently uses a printer she is happy with and price is low, due to discounts she gets for brokerage. That's what I am asking.

Now back to spamming. What's your problem? I just mentioned a website and all of you lost it. Let me assure you, I don't have time to sell anyone's services, AND they can't afford me. Next time I suggest you read the whole email before getting in there with your dumb question, that has nothing to do with what I am asking.

And by the way, in the picture, you LOOK grown up, so don't let me or anyone else sell you services, but just take it as another piece of information. You can do that, can't you?

Bill, it isn't likely you would get a broker deal going with any local real-world (retail) printers. These are usually arranged with wholesale printers, as I thought I'd explained. There are many online. Maybe the one you found is terrific, maybe not. Shop around.

You must contact any online printer who looks attractive to you and ask them to send you a package of sample work and a catalog. Tell them you're a designer and you're shopping for vendors to add to your supply chain, otherwise they might blow you off.

If, after you review the materials they send and you like what you see, contact them and ask about a broker's program. Often, there will be something in the catalog about this, and you can start from there. If they seem confused about the whole idea, write them off and don't waste your time.

And dude, work on your attitude. Nate is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful people in this community. I've learned plenty from him, myself. But like most people, he probably doesn't respond well to being verbally abused for asking a simple, straightforward question.

Thanks Mara for both points. Transitioning from a city in Canada to a crazy metropolis like New York has not been easy. I will take your advice and start looking for online printers with possible broker programs, meanwhile after a few prints of different sorts from my printer, I have been pleasantly surprised and happy, so are the clients.

Nate, I apologize for coming on a bit strong on your question. I didn't expect to be answering to the question that was answered before. Please accept my apology.

For the rest of the community, I am not a spammer, just too new to all American culture. I should learn with your help.

Bill, the first time I was in Canada, I didn't know what to do with the giant bowls of cappuccino and made a terrible fool of myself. Oh, and all the clean sidewalks; I thought I was in some humane variation on Disneyland. Why don't we all just start over?

Google "four-color process" "print" "broker's program" and maybe "US," to eliminate places that will tack on astronomical international shipping charges that will defeat the whole purpose of working with a wholesaler. There are places in California, Kentucky and, I believe, New Jersey as well. There's a place in Destin, Florida that I dealt with only because a client insisted upon it. I will never make that mistake again. Good hunting.
