Problems opening files
salcampbell (5 pencils) | Thu, 2008-02-14 20:04Hi there, can anyone help?
My G5 recently has been playing up when I try to open or place files in Quark, Photoshop, Indesign etc. I go to open/place from those three applications, and I find the file I need, I go to click on said file, and I just get the wait icon spinning around for ever. I reboot, and it works for a little while, and then happens again. Is this a problem with my finder?
Thanks to anyone who knows the answer!

I would start by repairing your permissions on your hard disk. That clears up a lot of problems.
What system are you running? If it is tiger (10.4.x), then I would run applejack. Link here: http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
If you are running leopard, then applejack isn't compatible yet.
I'm sure other suggestions will follow...
OnyX is another good free app. It runs cron scripts that your computer normally runs in the middle of the night (I think 3am) but if your computer is off at that time the cron scripts won't run. OnyX lets you run these when you want and fix directories, repair permissions, etc.

And, if you're trying to load images from a server that could be an added issue. I try to work on files only on my local machine unless the requirement of shared images makes this impossible (a design workgroup set up). Check with your IT person for your connection and make sure it's not dropping or compromised.
