Problems opening InDesign CS3 Fils in InDesign CS3

The title isn't a typo. I'm having problems opening up another InDesign CS3 file a coworker sent to me and was wondering if any one knows of any way to fix it.

We are all running Apple computers except my coworkers running on Leopard and I on Tiger (yes I have yet to hop on the bandwagon and upgrade) and we both have Adobe InDesign CS3 with the latest updates.

Initial file was created on my coworker's PowerMac G5 desktop running Leopard and saved it to work on it some more off of her laptop which is a PowerBook running on Leopard. No problems yet.

However, the problem happens when I try to open up her work on my PowerMac G5 desktop running Tiger at work. I also have a Macbook Pro laptop running Tiger which can open the file fine but don't want to have to go on another computer to do all this stuff. Once I re-save the file on my laptop, I am able to open it up on the problem computer.

Any help on this is much appreciated!

I would start by trashing your InDesign CS3 preferences folder on the computer in question. That tends to solve most of the little glitches that pop up.

Home folder->Library->preferences-> then navigate to the ID CS3 folder and throw the whole thing in the trash

If not, you will probably have to reinstall the program.

What does trashing those files in the preference folder do? I've always heard about doing that, but never knew why. Most importantly, when you see files like that (i.e. Preferences>Adobe InDesign>Version 5.0>Color settings, etc.), that it's somewhat serious. I guess I'm a bit reluctant to trash these files unless I knew why.

Thanks, mbennett2

Apps depend on their pref files, in part, to run effectively. If the pref file goes bad completely or partially, you can have errors that won't go away any other way.

Sometimes these preference files become corrupt, and that can cause your programs to act strange.

What happens when you trash them is that the program re-creates new preference files. A lot of times this is all that needs to be done to fix a problem with a program.

Thanks for the tip:

Although, I have two libraries:

Hard Drive > Library > Preferences | and here I cannot find any folder containing the words InDesign.

In my user folder I have two folders which I deleted and it reappeared and had no use.
Hard Drive > Users > Username > Library > InDesign > Version 4.0
Hard Drive > Users > Username > Library > InDesign > Version 5.0

Could there be something else I can do before I reinstall the program as it will take a long time since I need to get IT dept's ok?

Hard Drive > Users > Username is what I meant by "home" folder, so you were in the right place.

Sorry, but off hand I don't have any tricks other than a reinstall. Good luck.

Repair permissions first: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions.

You can find your pref files by typing in InDesign and grabbing the .pref and .plist files you find (remember their locations in case things get worse as a result so you can put them back).

Did your coworker use any plugins to create his/her file? Could be you need that same plugin on your machine in order to utilize their file.

Also, check permissions on the file (get info) and make sure you have rights to open the file (make sure all but Other are Read/Write).

Worse case scenario and you could have them export an INX file and then open that on your machine. It's ID's basic transfer format and how a CS2 or CS user would open a CS3 file.

Are you guys sharing a server or transferring files some other way?

Since you are working on tiger, you could also try out Applejack. This will give you a good spring cleaning.
