Professionals Define Student Focus

Hi everyone -
I am asking all professionals to advise me, as a student, on the steps I can take now - specifically what to focus on - as a student.
I would appreicate advice from professionals working within the graphic design field about business, website links, miscelaneous topics, design software, etc. Basically, if you are excited about a certain topic and would like to pass it on, please do!
With sincere thanks -
Make sure you take advantage
Make sure you take advantage of any internship opportunity that you can. Real world and work experience means much more to employers than school work does.
Join AIGA or the GAG (Graphic Artists Guild) and start meeting other designers. It's a great network and you can find jobs this way.
Your question is VERY broad, but I'd say I love the Adobe Creative Suite and definitely use Linotype's FontExplorer to manage your fonts (But not in the latest Leopard; it's not yet compatible with 10.5.2. See JimD's post on this on creativebits).
I did print for 12 years but got sick of it and the low pay. Now I do web design; try to diversify your skills as quickly as you can and you'll be in demand.

learn typography
there are two things you can come out of school with that will put you ahead of your graduating peers: an ability to concept and an ability to create quality typography.
concepting is where the $$ is. if you are good at creating quality concepts, you will make money. it's one of the things students often miss. it's not about "making it pretty," it's about "making it communicate." and the key to that is good concept.
the other things students come out of school with little to no knowledge about is typography. and it's the 2nd thing that will jump out at an art director. learn how to kern. learn how to set a paragraph and a page of type. chances of doing any graphic design that doesn't have at least one word in it are slim to none, so learn how to handle that type. it's important. an any art director worth his or her salt will immediately notice any typography mistakes/issues in your portfolio. they will also notice if you set type beautifully.
while concept is where the money is, your craft is where the daily paycheck is. and typography is a big part of your craft.
Well said! I'd just add that
Well said! I'd just add that you need to do all this at breakneck speed and you're set. :)
