Drupal Tutorial?

jaronoff's picture

I am looking for a way to make my site more manageble, easily updateable, and comment friendly as well as standards compliant.

Hence, I've run into Drupal. I talked to Ivan and he mentioned possibly starting a tutorial if people were interested?

Well, is anyone interested? Any suggestions on how to start? He mentioned having a photoshop template.

I imagine that it's similar to making PHP includes and the such. Modular code, etc. Are there ways to make it so i can make a theme for my portofolio?

Example:
A form that has a upload image field, client title: Url: Description: etc.... then I just add info directly to some sort of database.

Kind of green in this dept. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
J

Very Interested....

I'm really interested in learning about drupal. I've got html experience, but next to nothing when it comes to programming PHP, Javascript, etc.

Due to an earlier post Ivan made about Drupal, I investigated and liked- but have no idea where to start, let alone the nuances of the thing.

I think a tutorial about it would be MOST excellent. I'd certainly benefit.

Very Interested As Well...

As someone with a constant thirst for CMS knowledge - which ones to use when, pros/cons, requirements, experiences, etc - I would very much appreciate an overall drupal tutorial.

The best part about this site is that I know if a tutorial is written, it will be easy to follow and understand. Thanks for all the great work.

Count me in...

I know html, illustrator, photoshop, dreamweaver, flash well but almost no programming background. I have considered using Vbulletin, phpnuke, MT for my site but if I can learn Drupal, I'll consider it instead.

I'm looking forward to it.

Id love to learn

All I know is HTML.. Updating my site is a HASSLE, I would love some sort of help to allow me to create a more advanced, easily updatable site.

Love to learn more!

I've worked in Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, InDesign, Pagemaker, HTML, Dreaveweaver...I've even set up sites in Nucleus and Wordpress, not to mention a few PHPBB forums.
I think my next foray will be into a Drupal setup, but I would love to learn more before I jump into the deep end!

I am not a themer, but I do a lot of Drupal development. If I can help in anyway, please let me know.

Also see my notes on Drupal in another discussion.

Suggestion

I'm not knocking Drupal but may I suggest having a look at Expression Engine, now freshly at version 1.3.
They have a forum module added now besides a redesigned control panel, and the community support is second to none.
Peace,
e-man.

Seems expensive?

I can't say anything bad about expression engine since I have never used it - but it seems like an expensive route to take.

Even for a 30 day trail it is $10. The good thing about Drupal is that it is open source (free) and you can modify the software any way you see fit, and install modules made by others who have done the same.

There are even different distros of Drupal geared towards different purposes.

I'd like to try EE though before I say much more. Does look interesting though.

Thanks for telling us about it, Ive never heard of it before and am looking forward to seeing what its got to offer.

Just tried the demo (free one)

and honestly, I wasn't that impressed.

It IS a nice featured blogging solution, and I think the admin panel is pretty sweet.

But I don't see what makes it worth the cash. Seems very 'Invision Power Board' like in the admin panel, which is good since I'm used to it - but that's the only thing I really liked about it.

I think Drupal is more featured and powerfull, and can easily be adapted to large-scale things; most importantly - all for free.

Thanks for telling us about it though, I always liked to see new software.

No problem :-

I would've liked to be able to give a more in-depth review, but I don't have enough time to try it out the much - and the trial version doesn't let you access the code, so I wouldn't be able to theme it (which would be my favorite part).

I can't complain about it's features and ease use..my only complaint is the price, since there are free options that offer the same (and more) features.

What I really don't like is that it does not come out of the box with the ability to do forums, you have to get an additional forum module.

The forum module all by itself is an extra $45. Not my cup of tea.

I guess it is more like Invision Power Board than I thought LOL

Happy to help

I can think of very few things more worthwhile than helping artistic people to learn Drupal. Well, I guess finding a cure for AIDS would beat it, as would discovering the ultimate source of clean and renewable electricity... but apart from those, not much else. :-)

I have experience as a module developer, and as a writer of tutorial-style documentation for Drupal. Many people have found my three-part tutorial - Making taxonomy work my way - to be very useful.

People like me (from drupal.org) know coding and development. People like you (that's everyone here at creativebits) know graphic design and art. Let's bring the two together, and make magic happen! Let me know what I can do to help.

A programmer with humor. :) nice combo.

Thank you Jaza and kbahey for your kind offer for help. I'll contact you to coordinate in email. We'll start this general Drupal and Drupal theming tutorials once I get back from holiday at the end of this month.

would very much appreciate a show, careful tour on this. I'm a drupal user who is a real klutz, though the thing has been superbly helpful in my university teaching.

Drupal tutorial?

Did this tutorial happen? I'm very interested. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and occasionally Dreamweaver. Can hand-code HTML and Javascript, and played around with Perl and php -- couldn't write on my own. Don't know SQL. Tried GetActive and hated it. Need something immediately for a 6 week campaign. If Drupal can't be picked up that fast probably going with Democracy In Action. Open to suggestions. Thx!

I don't thinks so

i just know that i replied to the message last year and never got any feedback on it. Also, there was some talking in the works to get a tutorial section on this site but i don't know if that is still happening either.
