Project Management App : Follow Up & Product Plug

afterglow's picture

I had been asking around in a previous thread for a good project management app for keeping track of freelance work. Thanks for all your replies and suggestions...

Having tried a few and found them very powerful but difficult to use or very intuitive but underpowered, I finally settled on OD4Contact. Having looked at this before and been reasonably impressed, it seems to have come on in leaps and bounds with v2.

The app consolidates all contact info in one window so you can switch between contact info, associated tasks and emails sent from that contact.

The interface is very clean for an app that integrates Email, Contact Info Tasks and Notifications together.

It even syncs with the iPod as well as your Bluetooth phone. I've found it far more powerful than Apple's Address Book even though it uses the same database.

My only wish is that it could display the content of the email from a contact and not just the subject line. The Application Icon is horrible as well but thats what IconBuilder is there for..

Sales pitch over.

Here's an example of the Interface window

No...I don't think it's purpose was as a project management app like Merlin but it has enough options for me to retain customer information close to deadline and project information.

I like the fact It will open any file for you with a simple click of a notification window. It's very handy for handy to have the .psd file ready to go at 8am with the project notes while I'm still munching on my cornflakes.

if it's not just you using it

if it's not just you using it, you might consider a web-based alternative. Most of these stuff, however do a lot more than needed, but are easily customizable if you know some php... I personally use phprojekt ( http://www.phprojekt.net ) - while it has quite a lots of features (and not so good user interface, but that can be solved with a wee bit of programming) is still useful.

(a not-so-free but very good alternative is Basecamp - basecamphq.com )

I was leaning towards Basecamp but my connectivity while I'm travelling can be quite sporadic and I'm working on my own so an offline program made more sense. OD4Conact isn't a project management app per se, but it can be shoehorned quite easily into that role.

i looked into phproject, but

i looked into phproject, but as you said the interface is hell. functionality however seems to be very sophisticated.

what i'm looking for is not just a project management for myself, but i want to create a client section for my clients, where they can see the status of their project and the latest artwork. i guess this can be done with several CMS systems.

Project Management vs. Group Management

Personally I believe that the best group management softwares are still CMS-based. Check www.dotproject.net or www.php-collab.org ... Obviously the interface designs can be improved, but you can theme it yourself!

Of course you can have someone else set up your project management software for you: http://www.copperproject.com/
