Pt vs GSM
alexleonard (123 pencils) | Thu, 2005-10-20 20:00Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows how to convert a paper weight of 16pt to GSM?
I'm buying some "paperboard" 16pt cd sleeves, and was trying to work out how to compare the 'pt' method of weight with the standard GSM system.
anyone any ideas?

Historically in the US paper is measured as a weight of a ream of that particular type of paper. This is sometimes called the "substance" or "basis" (as in "substance 20" paper). The standard sheet size or "basis size" varies depending on the type of paper. As a result, 20 pound bond paper and 50 pound text paper are actually about the same weight.
In other words. GSM is grammage, which is weight of paper per square meter, but points are used with this meaning to measure the thickness, or caliper, of paper or card stock in the paper. One point equals 25.4 micrometers or microns.
i came across the pound weights thing on a few 'conversion sites' - seems like a crazy way to arrange it.
then again i still think in miles and only know how many 'stone' i weigh. so i cant talk.
thanks though. i think i'll just go ahead and order these sleeves and cross my fingers that they'll be decent.
cheers,
Alex
