jstiddy (32 pencils) | Tue, 2006-02-14 16:27I am trying to convert a quark 6 doc to a indesign file and I am under deadline was wondering if anybody had any ideas on how to resolve the issue. My client has no version of quark just indesign. This file is quark 6 I am stuck on this one.

You'll need to save your document back to a 5.0 .qxd document, then open it in Quark 5.0 and save back to a Quark 4 .qxd... which can then be opened and converted (usually with no problems) by indesign.
If you need the doc converted, I don't care to try it for you as I have both versions (I have Indesign as well so I suppose I could take it to that as well - though you may want to do that conversion on your machine)
You can get my e-mail by clicking on my website link in the member area and choosing the contact page. You'll probably want to be sure to save the quark file with the .qxp extension in a folder and zip or stuff the file before sending it - just the file, no graphics are necessary.
Or possibly you know someone with both versions of Quark... Hopefully this helps!

Why not just convert all your files the easy way?
Markzware has released Q2ID (QuarkXPress to InDesign). This is an InDesign Plug-in which automatically converts QuarkXPress documents into new InDesign V3 (CS) or V4 (CS2) compositions.
Q2ID is a conversion tool that enables Adobe InDesign users to painlessly convert QuarkXPress 3.3, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x documents into the native InDesign document format. Q2ID converts QuarkXPress layout elements including, but not limited to: page size, style sheets, fonts, text, images, layers, lines, tables, etc.; provided that InDesign supports the layout item.
This release if for OSX users with Windows soon to follow. You can get full details at www.Q2ID.com
can you just save all the pages as eps files then import them one by one to indesign? Not the quickest way but it might be another option
That Q2ID software sounded so good until I saw the price. I was thinking $30-50 for it, $200 US seems a bit steep.

Overpriced? What's your time worth?
Even at the entry level pay-grade it doesn't take long to burn though $200 worth of time. After that, it's paid for itself. Think Return On Investment. Use the time you save to enjoy your craft.
Well my issue with the price was that it would probably be alot easier to pitch the idea of purchasing the software at work if it were cheaper. I'm the only one who uses InDesign fulltime, everyone else uses Quark, so I would be the only person in the whole art department finding this of any use. I do agree it would pay for itself eventually, but I do have Quark 6.5 and 5 on my computer in the instance I do need to save a document back to version 4 to open in InDesign.

Saving back with Quark: Cheapest option. Just be advised that some graphics get set to overprint, usually illustrator, and won't appear on final output so you just have to relink them. Other than that the conversion's good.
Markzware is MUCH cheaper than if you had to buy Quark 6 and 5, and I think they are banking on that.
