while the layout is nice and the colors could work. ( i would move towards darker colors which relate better to a sense of nostalgia and even imply some vintage-ness. the biggest thing its missing is texture especially in the background. it would compliment the texture that is on Ray's face.
Howdy! Great stamps. I would say that there isn't one item on it that's a priority. I'd make Ray's head bigger and center of stamp and put the text below his chin/neck. Maybe "watermark" the R underneath his head?
Don't you love critiques. "It's great, but change everything." :)

Personally, I think you can't really have that kind of font at that size and have it work. If this is a typography assignment, you need to be a lot more creative with this and obviously the most important thing is to choose a font size and type that will work in such a small space.
If it wasn't a stamp, I would think it worked really well... but you have to take into consideration how small this is actually going to be.
and I'm just brainstorming here. But, isn't everyone in your class putting the name of the artist and their face on their stamp? Think outside of the box... what do you think of when you think of Ray Charles? I think of that "Georgia" song. I would probably use typography and type out the lyrics of a portion of a song that he is famous for that when you hear it, you know it's him. And maybe make a little watermark of his head in the background to bring home the point? No need to put his name on it at all. Just an idea. ;)
this was the first gd class i had a year ago, just wanted to see some feedback from older work. i agree with the idea of breaking outside the box.
thanks
you didn't have to put the little ripples on the edges? putting a white dotted line in illustrator works good for those.
Maybe this for the font:
