Re-naming an exernal drive

why is it that whenever you rename and external drive ( external hd, thumb drive, etc) that it only shows in all-caps instead of lower case. is there any way around this?

Must just be in the nature of the encoding of the name. Most of these drives are plug & play on all OS. This might have something to do with it, just a guess really.

I noticed this too... quite annoying. OS X seems to be the only OS I've had trouble on, however. When I name it under Windows it keeps the name, but when I put it on OS X it makes it all-caps and then it stays that way. I haven't tried on LInux yet...
