Recommend me a new mouse

I can't stand the Mighty Mouse. There is nothing mighty about it, it's arguably the worst product Apple has ever made. Every other week I had to try and clean the stupid ball because I can no longer scroll down. Now the mouse has begun randomly jumping across the screen from time to time.

I want nothing more than to throw this stupid mouse out the freaking window.

Can someone recommend a decent mouse, with scroll whell (all directional is nice) that doesn't suck and will fit in well in front of my iMac and with the standard Apple iMac keyboard?

Thanks in advance

visually fit in? don't know about that.

as far as usability, i'm a big fan of logitech mice in general. fairly ergonomic, work well. i use a VX wireless notebook mouse and an older MX1000 wireless at home and an older mx500 wired mouse at work.

oh, and btw, that's not the worst mouse apple ever made. that stupid "round" mouse that had 3rd party vendors making a "cradle" for it so you could feel which direction to hold it was the worst. unforgivable from apple. significantly sacrificed usability for aesthetics (and it really wasn't very aesthetic).

I agree, logitech mice are the best Ive ever tried. I tend to go for wired ones as I haven't found a wireless mouse that works as well yet.
Don't go for the cheap stuff either, anything above £25 should do the trick nicely.

The mighty mouse - like the round one - was a dumb idea imho. The beauty of the standard Mac mouse is the simplicity...

That's why I always get a kick out of the PC folks who rant that the "Mac mouse only has ONE button!!" Yes... because you only NEED one button.

I've got a Kensington two button mouse at home AND at the office for the last 6 years! It has NEVER quit on me and has gone through a SERIOUS beating. Its rock solid (ugly) but rock solid!

I've heard too many horror stories about mighty mice (ESP the battery hungry wireless one!). . . don't recommend them. But I would swear by Kensington as a brand.

Have you considered a tablet?

You know I've been thinking a lot about trying a tablet, but I just don't know if it's something I need. Right now I'm doing a lot of retouching work in Photoshop, and economic recovery willing I see myself working more and more in that area in the coming year. I'm just not sure if a tablet would be beneficiary to that type of work. I have very little graphic web design stuff going on at the moment and most of it is maintenance of sites that are already up. So I've just never been able to convince myself to make the leap into buying a tablet, and unfortunately I don't have any colleges that use one.

Do you use a tablet? You use it as your day to day pointing (mouse) device?

If you do a lot of retouching you have to buy a tablet. Even if you just browse the web the tablet is much better than a mouse.

You will need to buy one with an A6 or A5 active space. Make sure to give yourself enough time to learn and get used to it. It will take about 2-3 weeks. You need to use the tablet and the mouse at the beginning together. You should not force yourself to use the tablet all the time. Just for drawing and retouching. Later on you will do everything with it once your hand and brain learns it.

You will never want to go back. It's so much more intuitive and precise.

I switched to a tablet (I had bought a BIG one from a friend who was moving away and PRACTICALLY gave it away to me when he left) but until I got a flat screen monitor on my desk at the office I never used it full time. I only pulled it out of "storage" when I needed to do re-touching. NOW I use it exclusively and though it took some getting used to it is BETTER than a mouse.

I STILL have my kensington and I have it next to the tablet so that anyone who comes on my desk when I am not there can use the machine with no problem.

another BIG vote for the logitech wireless revolution mx!

great performance, LOVE the free-spinning scroll wheel, the assignable buttons are superb!
i can open the cd tray, print, change applications and side scroll, etc, etc... and never have to touch the keyboard!

The trackballs are great for straight production work - running jobs to imagesetters and things of that nature.
