Resource Strategist
This one is tough for me, since the project is for my Father's business. He is a lawyer/resource strategist (more emphasis on strategist). He wishes to break away from his simple serif (times-like) font and create a logo, or logo-typeface that represents the industries in which he consults.
He specializes in the following industries: Mining, Gas/Oil, Pipelines, Forestry. This current design is a rough, but i would like feedback to see if I'm on the right track. I do not want a logo that looks like every other law firm out there.
This job is especially difficult since it is family. If anyone has some good ideas or wishes to help work with me (pro-bono), I'd be happy to hear from you.
I look forward to hearing your comments.
NOTE: Please don't mention his name in the comments as I do not want Google to pick it up.

I like the idea... they look
I like the idea... they look like business cards... are they?
I don't think they are so I'll comment with the assumption that this is a logo. :c) Overall I like the idea, it's simple and gets the point across. Some of the things I don't like are the size, his name needs to be bigger and the little icons could stand to be larger too. (The also look somewhat pre-installed PS custom shapeish.) I'd play with diffrent ideas if I were you, as I think about it there are lots of possibilities with a title like "Resource Strategist" you can do some cool things with that.
Anyway, that's my $0.02. :c)
I agree
I agree that you need to play around some more. He are my comments:
1) the type is dead, and lost in that shape
2) the shape and placement - along with the colors- make it seem like you are going for a trendy look rather than a layer/corporate look. This asymmetrical look is not something that works for your demographic.
3) the icons are lost in that shape - being that they are too small and up in the corner.
Hope it helps.

I really love this idea, I
I really love this idea, I really do! The first thing I'm reminded of when I look at is playing cards though... so I don't know if that is something that a lawyer would want representing himself... you know, a joker or something?!
I pretty much agree with
I pretty much agree with what the others said, especially about them looking like playing cards. You've got a very modern look going right now and I think for a lawyer you might want something a little more formal. You could try adding a thin, white stroke a few centimeters from the edge. Also maybe you could make the shapes hollow by adding a stroke to those as well. Well, maybe not, but those are some things to play around with. Keep working, you're onto something.
i really enjoy the look.
i really enjoy the look.
The icons, though, need some work. They are not iconic enough is the best way i can put it. To me, only the water drop has a very gestalt sort of factor to it. The tree and fire need a little bit less detail to match that. they are too different from each other to seem as though they are a matching set. The sillhoutte, if i could spell it, is where I'd take off from. The tree, especially if printed small, its details will bleed out and lose its look. Lose the pine needles and make te icon more visible as a shape from far way. The water drop, i'd possibly experiment with a tiny "shine" line in the bottom of it, but do it as a cutout so its the same color as the backgroujnd. The fire icon needs more large curves. you might want to try a single flame rather than three flames, and round the bottom out.
From far away, with the icons a bit larger, I think you should be able to tell what each icon is, or at the very least, be able to differentiate them each other by general shape.
aces rolled up over kings
The cards represent playing cards in general. Sounds like your dad is a very smart man heh. Oil, forestry , stuff like that is/are all part of the commodity markets. I would follow a more executive approach, for the people he deals with surely follow the ISE index, so to speak. =)
