Dropcopy goodness

Ivan's picture

Is it a pain for you to mount a server each time you want to send a file to your coworker? Has it happened that you started moving the files from your Dropbox before it finished copying? No more!

Jim pointed out an excellent piece of donationware Dropcopy.

Dropcopy sending

Dropcopy helps you transfer files within a local network. When you launch it you get a small active ring on your desktop that you can move around. To transfer a file you just have to drop a file on it and all the users with Dropcopy installed will pop up. Release the dragged file on the name you would like to transfer the file to. That's it. No mounting servers or connecting to networks. Cool, isn't it? And you haven't seen the receiving animation yet. :)

Dropcopy receiving

When the transfer begins the circle starts to animate and you get feedback about how much of the file has been transferred. The best part is that you get a similar animation on the receiver side, so you can see the progress of the transfer. Note that you can see the filename (broadband in the example). And you can also stop the transfer if you like on both the sender and receiver side.

If you have a slow network or you transfer huge folders there is one more thing you will appreciate about Dropcopy. It automatically compresses folders before sending and uncompresses upon receiving.

Check out the preferences for many options. Most importantly you can select what folder you want to receive files to. Some prefer the Desktop instead of Dropbox, just like back in OS9 days.

This great app needs some work in terms of GUI, but it's work in progress, so we can expect some better graphics. If they accept, I'm sure that some of us will be happy to help. (Please confirm.) Also, it would be nice if there was a new file received notification option. But, all the basic required functionality is in place and it is a tremendous help in a working environment.

If you want to be notified when you receive a file, so you don't have to check your Dropbox every half an hour read this.

Reminds me of Afterglows wish app..

Doesn't this work a bit on the same idea that Afterglow had for his FTP app or am I mistaken myself?

Cian's idea for an app

was for a similar way, but to FTP a file to any FTP server... this app just works with LAN file sharing.

Mmm but close

I was close then when remembering Cians app..

I still think Cian's way of

I still think Cian's way of sending stuff through contextual menus, both LAN and FTP would be awesome. I understand it's not easy to program it, because of the special situation of contextual menus within OSX. Hope some smart developer will pick it up anyway and give it a try.

Yeah

I would still like to see him develop this FTP app. It sounded very useful.

I might have some

I might have some developments for you in this regard but it's all at very early stages.....

As an alternative there's an Automator FTP action that does 60% of what I wanted in an FTP app. There's a bigger incentive now that I finder that Tiger breaks the favourites in Transmit in a horrible fashion. Panic aren't hugely pushed to update 2.6 and advised me to upgrade to 3.0 to fix the problem. No thanks...

transmit is not all that

I've always admired the boys at Panic, bought their MP3 player, and wanted to like Transmit, but after faves broke in Tiger I just stoppped using it. It's never connected well, and was slower than other FTP apps I've used.

Anarchie/Interarchy is so much better and faster for pay apps, and Cyberduck is great and free and continues to be updated.

We've used DropCopy in the studio for a year since we stumbled upon it and it's been great, but also broke with Tiger. Nice to see they've continued to develop it - they don't publicize their upgrades very well! Their IP Scanner/Broadcaster are handy when you're behind a router for doing VNC connections across the net.

Ivan another good addition. So are you going to invoice me for the Cello Maudru job? :) How can I use you again if I can't pay my bills? Congrats on the readership goals, hope it continues to rocket. Another good tip for the graphic obsessed design community like myself. As far as Transmit I used to agree to all that but the latest version is better than other ftp apps out there, sorry to say, and I have tried them all.

Best
