Power Mac G5 Quad

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

"The Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad introduce dual-core PowerPC processors, a modern PCI Express architecture, and wicked-fast workstation graphics. Power one up today and blaze through your work, deliver ahead of schedule, and astound your clients — because this baby really moves.

With four processing cores, you’ll have more 64-bit resources: more L2 cache, more Velocity Engines, and more double-precision floating-point units. Videographers can edit more footage, filmmakers can produce more real-time effects, designers and photographers can process more higher-resolution images, and researchers can crunch through data sets for faster results. Compare a quad-core Power Mac G5 to the fastest dual-processor G5 ever built, and you’ll experience up to 69 percent faster performance running popular professional applications. Or make that up to three times faster, if you’re comparing with a Power Mac G4."

You know I was looking at those stats and wonder if this machine would make a difference in my workflow. Surely faster machine feels better, but I think even my single processor G5 is good enough for 98% of the tasks. And those 2% when I feel it could be faster, I'll just be patient.

Speed is one thing, the other is the theoretical memory that these babies can take. Like 128GB of RAM or something. I don't know if PS CS can use more than 2GB. Pre CS was maxed out at 2GB.

I don't know if there is a need for such speed and so much memory for a graphics designer at all. Do you have tasks that require such a powerhouse?

Let's put it this way, I'm on a 20" iMac G5 with 1GB or RAM and a 2Ghz Processor. I run Photoshop, Bridge, iTunes, iPhoto, Safari, and iChat. A lot of the time, I also have Dreamweaver running. These are all the latest versions of everything. Although, it is pretty quick, I think I just might be able to get a little more done a little faster with the Quad. It is just an amazing machine! I mean there really is no practical use for Joe Schmoe, but with the High Res. photo editing that I do, and all of the multimedia stuff, I think it would make such a difference. Besides, with the release of Aperture, that CPU will certainly be used. Think about all of the Final Cut video editing. I do that too. Rendering take forever if you have a pretty big project. I can almost go to the store and come back and have it still going. lol. Anyway, I'm not saying that everyone should go out and buy one, but if you are serious about your work, and you have some resource hogging apps, this is almost a must.

I think the primary objective of the blog post was just to show how powerful consumer machines are getting and also show that Apple was the engineer. I love it. I friggin' LOVE this company. lol. Anyway, I'm off.

Apple Store Memory Option $13,000 for 16gb of RAM....
Can't even think of a comment on that.

Anyone know why Apple branded ram chips are so ridiculously priced?

I cry whenever I hear about someone paying so much for a gig of ram where it can be found for $100 or so elsewhere.

I priced a new 20" iMac with an extra 1gig of RAM. That DIMM was 220 euro in the Apple Store. Crucial.com are selling it for 120 euro including VAT which makes me wonder whether Apple wrap it in the finest gossamer silk and include a Faberge egg to make it worthwhile.

Get the minimum memory from Apple and buy the extra from somewhere else. Crucial is not the chapest. I got it from OWC and works perfectly. I recommend you don't get 2x512MB, because you will want the 2GB eventually and than you would have to trash the 2 chips. You should rather go for 2x1GB from the beginning.
