Rules for color, lay-out, and fonts?
BreakfastBurglar (43 points) | Mon, 2006-06-26 20:37Do you guys know of any websites or books that reference what colors go well together, what colors don't go well together, lay-out rules, and font-use, etc?
I am student copywriter that can't always find a good graphic artist to work with so i just end up doing everything myself.
Actually, are there any talented young artists here that would like to collaborate with a talented young copywriter on some ads for our books? We could exchange email addresses and some works in progress....if you want.

The specific titles or authors that stuck to you might be a beneficial thing to contribute.
Otherwise, I am very familiar with book store chains and I know their selection sometimes does not include "industry-acclaimed" books.
smartass.

Trust the masters. I've found this book quiet useful:
Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color by Leatrice Eiseman
Really Helpful.
The Construct Agency
Building Creative Brands for People
Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, Jill Butler
It contains more than just graphic design, of course, but if you are looking for something that has rules, nothing beats this. And it is an amazing read no matter what field you are in. It might even help you with copy-writing. ;)
BTW, if you are looking for help with colours layouts and typography, Befor and after magazine is a very interesting and useful resource. You can download PDFs of individual articles from their website, for a small fee of course, but they are very good, and quite worth the money, especially for a beginner. :D

Check it out. I strongly recommend it.
You can visit http://www.colorblender.com and mix colors to get automatic color matches. It actually works very well.

There's also books from Robin Williams (not that one!) that you might want to look up. She's makes great easy to read books about design for non-designers.
Off the top of my head:
