S4 solutions call card

Hello, everybody. I'm a first timer here. I made this logo for a client of mine, who own a business consultancy firm. Please tell me what you think, and rate me on my layout as well.

Simple, to the point, I like it. i would vertically centre the text in the orange stripe on the bottom a little more. That little gradient is a nice touch, butI would lose it personally. Nice work man.

The mark itself could use more attention.

In today's Web 2.0 world, gradients are nearly a standard feature of any logo but gradients must add to the aesthetic of the design and I'm not seeing any value add here.

Secondly, the negative space (or positive, colored portions) is unattractive as the triangles of the numeral 4 do not share any proportion or balance with any other shape. They float uselessly in the sea of white and promise to be lost entirely with any amount of downward resizing.

The orange with the black stroke is jarring, as if you weren't sure how to reconcile the orange/black with reverse S4. Most particularly, the logo simply won't work as a pure 100% K solution, giving the feeling that the design is lacking 'bones'.

Last, but not least, is the inclusion of the word "SOLUTIONS" in the bar of the 4. Feels like an after thought rather than an intelligent design element integrated into the mark. Like the floating mini triangles, it too will be lost at smaller sizes.

Would love to see another round of the concept.

My biggest concern would be the weight of the S and the 4 are not conducive to each other. This might be the actual weights of the font itself (since letters and numbers within the same font often differ in weight), but once you use the letters in a logo they become art and you need to address their relationship to each other accordingly. The weight of the S is overpowering the lighter 4 in this configuration (imho). My second concern would be Cao's comment about "solutions" - looks like you put it there because it fit, not because it worked well. That said, I do believe you are onto something that will work well with a little tweaking.

Unless - of course - you're the $14 logo guy. In which case I say it's good to go - email it to your client with the invoice.

It would appear that you are struggling to lend definition to this letter/numeral combination so why reverse it at all? You could still retain the solid orange shape between two SOLID characters. All you would be losing would be that confusing circular anomaly.

Then...you could increase the text size of SOLUTIONS and move it down to run flush with the base of the "4". Otherwise, you risk losing it when you decrease its size say for a pen imprint...

Also, I know TONS of white space is great, but I don't think it's working here...my eye keeps wanting to fill it with something.

I don't like the orange bar at the base either...I would thicken that puppy up and drop ALL of the contact information in so the text is all flush; or lose it altogether and just have the text printing directly on white; or bleed the orange box right off those three edges. Currently it looks very Rolodex to me.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR should be at least 2pts. smaller than the card bearer's name...imho.

And...have you tried a portrait rather than a landscape orientation with this card? I think all of the information would flow better vertically.

Looking forward to seeing your next draft.

From a production standpoint I can tell you where you might run into problems. The reversed text in the orange bar might no print well. Tiny reversed text have a tendency to fall off when printing.

I would suggest moving that text to the white area on the right above the address. I think it would serve to fill in that area and avoid the issues with the text washing out.
