Save to WEB & DEVICES not working on Mac!!
Submitted by shele.bele on Tue, 2008-08-05 01:49.
I sliced my image up, and am trying to save it so I can upload them to my server. But, the option to 'Save to Web & Devices' is grayed out/unavailable. What's the problem and how do I fix this?
try another image and see if
try another image and see if it works or not.
just tried another
just tried another image...still no luck.
i googled this problem and found several posts about it, but no resolutions. but, i also saw where Mac users were able to use that option.
What program are you doing this from?
Photoshop? Illustrator?
Perhaps you're in the wrong format (i.e. jpg, tiff, etc.). Maybe you need to be in a correct format in order to do this.
Also, is it locked? Meaning, are you unable to edit?

What's the correct format? It's a JPG image. It's locked in the sense that I cannot click it... it's not available.
Here is a screen cap...see how the "SAVE FOR DEVICES & WEB" option is grayed out?
(I hope it's not too small for you all to see)
I mean it's in PSD
I mean it's in PSD formant... not JPG.
Do you have a lot of layers?
It looks like from your screenshot, that you have a lot of layers. Perhaps it's too large to save for the web? Layers add size, therefore it might just be too large.
This has happened to me, however it prompts me and tells me that it's too large to save for web. Can you resave as a jpg and see what happens? You would think that as a PSD it should be able to do the job, but I honestly don't know at this point.

I've had this happen, but it
I've had this happen, but it was because CS was glitching. Repair permissions, Restart and try again...should work.
Might sound silly but have you tried the key combo instead for the command?

How do I repair
How do I repair permissions?
& yes I just tried the key combo...but it didn't work.
cntrl+comm+shift+s?
I'll bet your permissions
I'll bet your permissions are messed up if you never done this. :)
Apps/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions
If that doesn't do it, boot up with your OS X Install DVD (But DON'T reinstall OS X). Go to File/Open Disk Utility and Repair Disk. I'd Repair Permissions here too.
Do step 1 first, restart and then try your app again. If that doesn't work, do step 2. Let us know how that goes.
You could also restart and hold the shift key, that boots in a mode that loads only default features.
What OS X are you running?

OK, Im reparing permissions now.
I'm running Version 10.5.3
You might also want to make
You might also want to make sure the file is saved before you Save as Optimized.
Command + I on the file and make sure permissions are thus:
1. Lock is 'unlocked'
2. Read/Write for everything but 'Others'. Should be Read Only.

All of the files have been
All of the files have been saved prior to me trying to Save as Optimized.
I changed the permissions to those and still no go =/
Do you have Adobe Device
Do you have Adobe Device Central installed? It is combined with Save as Optimized in CS3 and then called Save to Web and Devices. This feature's name was changed from CS2 to CS3...If you don't have ADC installed I'm wondering if it will disable your Save to Web and Devices feature?
Though digitalprosound.com says, "[Adobe] Device Central can be invoked from within Photoshop CS3 using a new "Save for Web and Devices" command." which leads me to believe the two are not mutually exclusive.

I'm hoping the permissions
I'm hoping the permissions repair will do it along with the restart.

I ran the permissions
I ran the permissions repair, but I'm still having the same problem! This is sooo frustrating! >=/
Can you try it on a new file
Can you try it on a new file with no slices? Let me know what happens.

Search for "imageready" and
Search for "imageready" and move the .plist and .pref files you find to the trash (don't have the app active when you do this). Restart the app. Your preferences will go to default, but hopefully the Save to Web and Devices will come back.
Did you happen to have a demo version installed before you installed the full version?

Plugins
When you installed CS3, was it bundled? Did you install the plugins for this particular issue? I know this particular "save for web & devices" is a plugin.
I guess that's another route we could take it...

and to add to the list..
Quit Photoshop, hold down Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Cmd and click the PS icon in the dock, click open. It will reset preferences if this is causing any issues!

When you set the file up, make sure it isn't a 32-bit file
For whatever reason, 32-bit files can't be exported to web or devices.
