Saving Legacy InDesign CS3 to CS1
onegirlcreative (1092 points) | Tue, 2007-07-31 16:45Hey Designers!
Does ANYBODY know if it's possible to save an InDesign CS3 document to a CS1 document? I am at work and none of the designers know, and I need to edit an indd CS1 doc that was created in CS3.
If anybody knows, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Suzanne

File Menu - Export. In the format drop down box, select 'Indesign Interchange'.
Note: (Your CS1 will need to have the .04 update or later to open the interchange file)
I just tried that, and it didn't work. I guess I don't have the 04 update. When I checked for updates in my InDesign CS1, it said there were no updates at this time.
But of course, when I tried to open the interchange doc, it said "it wasn't a valid InDesign document."
Any other suggestions, if any???

I'm confused. Are you using CS1 or CS3?
Download it directly from Adobe's Web site.

The computer here at work has CS3, but I need to make these changes on my laptop which only has CS1. My computer at work does not have InDesign at all, only Quark, so I am editing the indd document on my personal laptop, which only has CS1.
Sorry for the confusion.

Yikes, I don't think you can do that from within CS1. Maybe you could send one of us your file! Too bad I only have CS1 at home or I'd help.
I just took it home and worked on it from home (where I do have CS3).
Thanks for your comments! Suzanne

Use the Adobe Interchange format (INX) and you should be able to open your CS3 doc in CS1.
Here's a great vid, though it covers CS2 to 1, I think it will still apply in CS3:

When I tried opening the interchange doc, it gave me an error message saying that it was unable to open because it wasn't a recognized indd document. I thought that was weird....

I went and searched the Adobe knowledge base. Here is the answer straight from the horses mouth.

Yeah, to open CS3 in CS1 you need to save to save from CS3 to CS2 then to CS1... which is highly irritating and an obvious ploy to get you to upgrade!
I have CS3 on my Mac, but everyone else has CS1&2, which does cause a few headaches....
