Scaling multiple objects in Photoshop CS

afterglow's picture

I've only just upgraded to CS from v.7 and while it's got a few very nice features, one feature/bug is driving me mad. Most of the work I'm doing with icons involves a lot of distorting and scaling custom shapes. In v.7 I linked them together and went to the scale menu and hey presto...In CS it will only scale the currently selected layer, not the lined layers simultaneously......My way around this at the moment is to have bounding box option selected before I do the scaling and it goes as normal....

Anyone else ran into this and have a way to get it to revert to the v.7 behaviour.....

Now that you mention it, I do

Now that you mention it, I do recall working on a multi-layered image and NOT being able to perform some functions to linked layers. I was sure the feature was available in PS 7, but thought I was mistaken. Thanks for confirming I wasn't going nutz! Now... if we can just find a fix...

Scaling Vector Masks & Content

Here is another solution: Simply "hide" the vector mask with CMD+H (Mac) for the selected layer to scale the entire layer (including the vector mask). Alternatively leave the vector mask visible to scale the mask only. The same rule applies to linked layers. This should make you work a little easier.

Happy Scaling!

As per my experience this iss

As per my experience this issue comes up if one of the layers you are trying to scale is a vector shape. If the vector mask is selected, it will only allow you to resize the mask and not the other linked layers. So just make sure that none of the vector masks are selected and you should be able to resize linked layers as you would normally.

it works fine for me. as Jeff

it works fine for me. as Jeff said there is only a problem if one of the layers is a vector and it's selected when resizing. just select another non-vector layer and it should work as intended.

Unfortunately I produce all m

Unfortunately I produce all my Icons entirely through custom shapes so that presents a bit of a problem for me.....Always keep them vector so I can scale them at a later date

that's a bummer! :( maybe just add a layer with one pixel at 10% opacity for the selection purposes. btw, i'd love to see a file you produce from all vectors. just professional curiosity.

The solution to that is to me

The solution to that is to merely deselect the vector mask. When a vector mask is selected in Photoshop CS there is a thin border around it. Just click on the selected vector mask once to deselect it.

Pretty much all of my work that I do in Photoshop is done with shapes as well, and this solution works for me.

Jeff,

Cheers for that....I never noticed that convention before but I'm sure they had their reasons...

And Ivan...here's a sample of the layers for ye old brain thing on the left..This has quite a small amount of layers compared to other Icons.

Strange, I tried it on V7. Fi

Strange, I tried it on V7. First scaling was working only for one shape, then I added a layer mask (empty) and scaling worked for all linked, with a bug during transform; the shapes that have a layer mask are offset, but their grey edge is correctly placed.

Another solution in V7 is to change the tool: if you are using a vector tool, Command+T will affect the currently selected layer only. Switch to the brush, and you can now transform all your linked layers (which makes sense)

In 7, deselecting the vector mask, while a vector tool is active will not let you transform. The faster is then to change the active tool before using transform.

BTW, STUNNING gallery that you've got there!
