Screen Printing Anyone?
thornysarus (797 points) | Sun, 2006-01-22 15:39Just curious...
Is anyone on CB involved or interested in screen printing either as a hobby or profession?
I'm about to begin a pop art series of 3-color silkscreen prints on handmade paper. The series will contain about 30 different designs, ranging from 8x10 inches to 4x9 feet. A pretty ambitious undertaking, but I'm really excited about getting started.

and I just bought a book called '100 posters, 134 squirrels' by Jay Ryan.
It has 100 of his posters, which are right up my alley design wise. If I had 10% of the talent this guy has...

I learned screen printing in college, and had a ton of fun. I wish now that I would have taken advantage of the equipment more.
Wanna see some cool modern screen printing... go to the big brand name stores for the younger crowd. The brought the techniques to new levels.

Without getting a job at a screenprinters, is there any way to get access to equipment somewhere and learn how to use it (as well as make a few t-shirts). It would be good experience and I'm sure it would help me in my career in the future. I was thinking maybe my local community college might have some equipment and possibly offer night courses for it but I was wondering if any of you had any ideas as well.
Really, if all you're wanting to do is a few shirts and play around with the technique a bit, with a bit of creativity, you can actually make everything you need to get started.
There's a dozen different ways to make stencils and as for a press, most art supply stores sell those little hinge clamps that screw down to the tabletop. Then again, I've seen people use smaller door hinges with removable hinge-pins.
When I first started out, I just visited a couple of local screen printers and volunteered to fold shirts or clean up the shop in return for them letting me hang out and showing me how it was done. I ended up working for him for 5 years while I was in college.
There's plenty of info on the web, but this link is one of the best that shows the photographic method of stencil-making (the one I'd recommend).

That's quite a process. Very informative link. I appreciate the push in the right direction and I will definitely be looking through that page for sure
Yup... It's not a process for instant gratification, that's for sure. :)

have the same problem as you. I've actually now started a business in sydney screen printing tshirts- my site: http://www.sydney customtshirts.com I use a combination of the thermal screen printing method and silk screening and i am fine for most jobs. However it is difficult to get insider info on how the process works beyond basics without either working for screen printing company or going to trade fairs, asking lots of questions etc.
