Selling logo copyright
sidesey (280 pencils) | Tue, 2006-09-12 08:37Hi all,
I haven't posted for a while, a long while, sorry bout that, been busy freelancing, I can't understand how you guys get time to post here as freelancers, gut am grateful that you do!
I have recently revamped a companies image with a new logo. I am expecting more work form them, but have really undercharged as they were my first client and i was just glad of the work at the time... Now suddenly after redesigning their logo, they gave me a legal document to sign that after some independent legal advice I have realised would mean that I would not even have the authority to say that I did the logo in the first place never mind use it for self publicity, should i wish to wish. So my question is, how much should I sell the worldwide copyright for? I am in the UK, so there are routes I can go down i think to find out more about the company, but just wondered what any of your opinions were. I have read all the other copyright issues that people have on this site, but I think this is a new one. Any advice, further places to check for information or anything would be useful. Most importantly don't sign anything unless you really understand it!!!!! I have been lucky to catch this in time...
On slightly different note, I wanted to add to my initial contract some small print, eg the cost will change if images are not supplied at a cetain resolution, or size etc, basically some contract jargon - hopefully that makes sense. Does anyone know where I could get some general guidelines like this, I think that taking it off the web is probably copyrighted too!!!!! Can't get away from the dreaded word...
Cheers

Hi,
Sometimes ago I found a copy of AIGA (American Institute of Graphics Something!) Contract Sample for graphic designers, I can't remember the link exactly but I think it's not copyrighted. It was a complete contract. I can send it for you via email but I dont have your email address.
Sorry for weak english :)
email me on eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%64%61%6e%78%38%38%40%79%61%68%6f%6f%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%64%61%6e%78%38%38%40%79%61%68%6f%6f%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')) so I can send it for you.
I suggest checking out this book as a start: "Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines (Graphic Artists Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines)" While you may not agree on the pricing structure the book uses (or your market won't bear the fees), there is a lot of information on what rights you have as a graphic artist and how to protect those rights or get paid VERY well for giving them up.
And it's the American Institute of Graphics Arts (www.aiga.org). They have put out a number of publications you may find useful.
Much appreciated. Will look into AIGA and see whats what.
