The nostalgic graphics and clean text work well, but I'm with artfiend on this one--might be a little too edgy depending upon where you insert these adverts. If they're going into a college/university rag, where the target market is a younger crowd, then you can probably get away with it. However, an older bookish market might be offended.
You have to remember that your client is Dictionary.com, not URBANdictionary.com. Now, I could see these ads working for that site!
