So far, this is the prefered option by the partners, just wondered what everyone else made of it. We're already considering enlarging the 'RG' trademark symbol incase anyone mentions it... :P

RG

People (well, me at least) are just going to see the "RG" symbol and think it's a ® or ™ mark, which never really look good tacked onto logos. Actually I rather like the old version of the logo which you posted!

Mislead....

Something about this doesn't say graphic design. I feel it's missing something...some graphic element that propels your concept.

Hmmm...

I totally agree, but you wouldn't believe how many versions we've tried with different icons...I suppose I'll have to soldier on...

 Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in square holes. The ones who see things differently.

What is "retro" about your

What is "retro" about your design group or your portfolio? Why is that word in your name? I don't find the answer to that on your Web site. Should I be finding it in your logo? I'm a little puzzled about this at present.

Retro is supposed to be

Retro is supposed to be about the concept of using elements from the recent past and redesigning them to work in the modern day - kind of recycling design concepts I suppose. It was also intended to convey the use of tried and tested techniques in a contemporary way. Unfortunately I think we may have been a little shoortsighted when picking the name as the concept is possibly a little to complicated to get across in a logo - which is why I keep going back to just having the name on it's own because a lot of our clients have said they really like it.

Any more thoughts would be really appreciated, I'm completely stuck at the moment :(

I think most people assume

I think most people assume "retro" to mean a specific design style associated with the 1950s or some other period in relatively recent history, but long ago enough to be noticeably not contemporary. But that's not what we're here to discuss, is it? Sorry.

Symbol

If the name isn't a registered or non registered trademark you might want to avoid having a similar mark in a similar place; could cause legal hassles.

I too like the retro logo with the rainbow icon better than this, though this one is more streamlined and clean.

Lubalin Graph by ITC. I'm surprised how many people have asked me that - it's been around since 1974!

I have to say I don't like

I have to say I don't like the RG symbol. I also liked the black text of the old logo.

Nothing to compare to

I never saw your original concept, but I like this one, sans the stylized RG. It's disconcerting and doesn't really serve a purpose. If you'd like to begin basing design blocks on the RG letters only, maybe consider drawing the RG from the logo, still in the Lubalin Graph font, and hitting it with different fills--ie. black leather, water, fur-- personalize it for your targeted audience.

In regards to trying to enforce the idea of retro graphics, does not the name say it all? I am a fan of Lubalin and I think your font selection is accurate in conveying the style of the '70's. If you wish to also encompass other design eras, maybe think of introducing different coloured letters for the 60's rainbow effect--you could even go as far as dotting the i with a flower power insignia to add a bit of the whimsical. And so forth. I think this logo is powerful and clean and lends itself to many design possibilities.

whimsical

God I HATE this word. :) You don't work in interior design, do you? Totally kidding, just about everything I've read from you has been right on.

words

If that bothers you, then you must REALLY like:

meandering; nutty; fruity; fluffy; location location location

Words that typify my kind of design work would run more along the lines of: biologics, interdisciplinary studies, sustainable environments, agriculture.

I think you two need a dollop of introspective insight into the juxtaposition of the whitespace between your aesthetics...

hahaha!, creativebits should start a competition to see what the craziest explanation anyone has given to a client (but only if they've believed it :)

I like it. You should post it and see what types of stories sail in.

Sometimes it's just easier

Sometimes it's just easier to say no to a client than to try to make them see they've hired them for YOUR ideas and skills, not theirs. :) So I'm SURE there are a ton of stories out there. I've got a few...
