Setup a Document in InDesign

I need help setting up a document in InDesign. I've used it once before for a magazine layout, but this time I plan on setting it up a little different.

How do I set up a document, and mark out lines showing edges and areas? Guides right? How do I set the guides to be exact in a certain part of the document? Or is there a better way where I can just set faint dashed lines marking the certain areas?

FMI: I'm doing a book cover (front, back, spine) and want to clearly mark out the spine so that I don't make a mess of it.

Peace out!

Just use guides on the master page as well as empty boxes for specific items (such as UPC symbol areas) - be sure not to fill or stroke the boxes so they don't print. Once you have all your guides set up, then move to the normal pages and start placing your artwork.
