Should I give the layered file to printer?

Hi, The printer is asking for the layered file and font style to print for plastic business card. I don't usually give layered or editable file. Should I give it to them or not? Is it necessary?

They said they dont have the font style that I've use there. I've sent the design. I forgot to flatten other fonts and I have flattened the logo. Iv designd it in illustrator but they will print in psd. I think they don't have Illustrator.

Thanks!

(a) scrawny is right, ,PDF would be a much better way to give them the file.
(b) any printer that wants to print out of photoshop instead of illustrator (regardless of what the reason is) should not be used. they don't know what they're doing.

Thank you for your reply. I've sent them the pdf and he asked where I made it I said Illus u can also open it in psd. I hesitate

He said they need the layered file of the design and also the font style that they are
going to use. I said why? He said that the fonts I use there is not available in their psd. Maybe he want me to send the font for them to download.

Yea... I was thinking to give it to another printer but can't decide.. now bec. of your reply.. thank you.. I will just giv to another printer.

you do *NOT* need the layered file to properly rasterize a PDF in photoshop. as long as you embedded the fonts in the PDF, it will open up properly in photoshop as a raster file.

it will be fine give them the files.

If they are inkjet plastic cards with a full colour design you will hardly notice the difference. It's all rasterised at the end of the day. This of course depends on the quality of your chosen printer/client expectations/file setup. If they are screen printing the cards then vector would be better, but is still not essential to get acceptable results.

If they haven't got the font, give them it so they can do their job.

Bingo. Illustrator or pdf doesn't matter since it sounds like they'll rasterize either way. But a lot of printers (especially gang printers and discount guys) have an all-psd workflow - it's an easier way to handle large amounts of individual files.

Of course - every file gets rasterized in any workflow, anyway - it's the resolution of the rasterized image that makes the difference. A standard (flattened) psd file will only be whatever resolution you give them (300dpi for example) a vector file will be rastered at the full resolution of whatever imagesetter (printer) you're using (up to 3600 dpi or so with some imagesetters). Since they are asking for the layered file - they might want the file and your fonts so your fonts will print at full vector resolution. So don't be so quick to think the printer is trying to screw you - he might be trying to help you.
