This is a 6"x11" Direct Mail Piece (Jumbo Postcard)

For his steak house on Main St In HB, CA
There weren't many changes The logo was Provided Hi-Res
He loved the Design straight off...
So I wanted some second opinions

The big picture on the front

The big picture on the front of the postcard appears to be slanted a bit..(the brick column things are not vertical...I would fix that. Also--on the back --the white border around the white box is uneven. Also, if you haven't, I would check with the USPS guidelines and make sure that this piece can be direct mailed the way it is designed now...(there are strict guidelines on where you can place things, and where you can't, it can make the mail undeliverable if you ignore those things). Other than that, it looks pretty nice...fairly typical, and expected, but nice. The only other thing I'm not too sure about is the gradient on the front, may look better w/o it, or more subtle.

Photo on front - Box on back- USPS

The photo on front is slanted thats the way it was taken, i thought it gave some contrast to the rest of the piece

The box blurred a bit i should have set the Jpeg quality higher i think thats why it looks off center.

As for the USPS well this piece has been mailed - and i work for a Mail House on the side and know all about the guidelines.

And it probably would look better w/o the gradient I think thats a good suggestion.

I would say typical too, because well its a steak house and I wanted to get that feel I guess.

picture slant

it doesn't necessarily bother me that the pic. is slanted...but it needs to be slanted more if that's the case. Either 100% straight or obviously slanted..right now it just looks a little careless...

I didn't take the photo myself, but I can see what you are saying -
I guess I should have taken some more liberty with it.

Work is so boring at this job been here 3 years and want to move on. Doing only Fitness/Storage Postcards and Door-Hangers gets repetitive. I was excited to get this Steak House and ended up overlooking the slant of the photo.

I would say however IMO the subtle slant doesn't bother me.

that really passes USPS guidelines?

with the indicia all the way at the bottom like that? i'm surprised. last time I had to set up a mailing panel, there was a lot more white space required in the regs. but it's been a couple of years.

Myrddin Crow's picture

Well this DM

Because of its size its classified as Letter, it's sent Std Presorted.

I know i referred to it as a Postcard, to me thats what it is, to the USPS its a letter.

Simplify

I really think that the design is too busy. Many elements are calling for attention. Many different typefaces used. I would get rid of the fade in picture, just make it solid, and the back is even busier. Is there anyway that you can change the logo?

Myrddin Crow's picture

Nope

There is only 1 font being used aside from the logo at different sizes, it was his logo he had it made earlier.

The fade on the pic is a legit suggestion it might look better that way. As for it being busy its Hard when a client, or the owner of your design firm wants it a certain way.

Sometimes you just have to let the a-holes be right.

Lol, understand what you're

Lol, understand what you're saying. The client is always right at the end :)

I totally agree about the

I totally agree about the brick wall. I saw that right away and thought it looked tacky. It needed to rotate one or two degrees clockwise. It's rare (no pun intended) to use a photo exactly as provided. Trust your eye.

There are indeed too many fonts. You've pointed out that it's only one typeface, but all the different sizes, outlines, etc. are different fonts of that typeface. The overall effect is sleazy. This looks like a higher-priced place, so that might not be the look that would do your client the biggest favor.

I would have justified the left edge of the map (not the compass rose) with the left edge of the mailer panel.

The black-to-gold gradient is dirty looking, and one on that side would have been enough. Restraint is more stylish. I think you could have gotten away with the larger gradient if it had had fewer steps, like the one above, so there wasn't as much of the middle ground showing.

The silhouetted jazz musicians appear to be floating up out of the box. Perhaps they could have been twice as large and lower. I would have considered a more subtle contrast, though.

Finally, I think the box in the upper right corner of the mailer panel side is one box too many. The text inside the box could have worked more effectively without it, and would have made a more stylish use of the ragged horizontal edge. You could then have included the address as part of that block by putting a discreet dingbat between "Available on Sundays" and the address. Right now, that area looks kind of choppy.

I hear you about the "same old, same old" nature of your job. It's good that you're adding other kinds of jobs to your portfolio with a brighter future in mind :-)

Client

I know I said he loved the design and their weren't many Design changes, However I have Boss who is a control freak... He likes to make final decisions about things he doesn't totally understand.

Some things I had to let him change because he's an ass like that.
Also when you work for a place for 3 years that limits your creativity it gets increasingly harder to be creative. Again this is why I want to leave where I currently am.

I thank everyone for their input! So far this site is saving me from being bored atm.

Sounds like my Boss!!!

Life is funny. You can go talk to your boss, or you can call HR on him regarding the issue.

But if he still refuses to take you seriously, sometimes it helps to give your boss the one finger salute. Problem solved.

Myrddin Crow's picture

Yes MOnkey

Let's call HR on his ass...

HAHA...

Well I have the next best thing anyways.
