Skinned knees
Springwood (46 pencils) | Tue, 2007-12-04 05:45I tamed down the header and reduced its size as well as the overall site dimensions. I also settled on a simple logo (small) to represent rather than tell my life story. Thanks for all the feedback on this project; it has revolved 180˚ from where I started.
All of the comments have led me towards being able to take off my training wheels:) I look forward to the skinned knees now!
This forum is an awesome resource of intelligent, friendly and extremely helpful individuals. Keep it up.

Actually, you only went about 6 degrees from where you started. :)
Keep on contributing. You spawned some good thoughts.
Edit: You might want to make the tone of your copy consistent. You use 'we' and then say 'contact me' at the end of the paragraph. I'd recommend just using the singular if you are a one person shop.

1. Your nav looks very generic and do not tie into the rest of the site.
2. The grey background makes everything look very dull.
3. Your paragraph copy looks to be just pasted.
I really think you should start this website fresh.
Just my thoughts... keep us updated.

Hm . . . it may be time to take a break and get some inspiration. Browse the web and notice the different page layouts and designs that you like. What do they do to make you like them? Sometimes I find the best thing I can do for my designs is give them a break and come back a little later.
The banner is only 65px in height - that's pretty small considering the rest of the site doesn't seem to balance it out or have enough weight.
Although you took some of my advice in formatting the text, it still doesn't look like you've treated it very well. The small picture that is left aligned does not have sufficient padding, and all of the text is left aligned as well. Also - if you're going to have rollover/hover states for your navigation links, I would suggest having it for your content links as well.
Another thing I noticed is I believe you removed some lines or boxes or something - your navigation is now floating.
My biggest suggestion would be to look at what is working and what isn't in other sites. You'll be amazed at what ideas and techniques you'll get.

I suggested he remove the boxes as I didn't see any need for them. :) Personally, I like using item positioning to insinuate the containers if possible. Of course this isn't always possible.
A good example is this site as the left column delineates itself without a box to contain it all; it's done by sizing all content the same width.

Yeah, this site has individual boxes containing the sections, but they are all the same width - which gives the division of a seperate column. With the small amount of navigation in the Springwood Designs site, it doesn't really have that same look, instead it looks like it's floating.

Yep, a simple format change would fix that on his site, though, and would look better than the boxes, IMO.

As you move forward with this design, I hope you'll consider adding open spaces to the areas around the navigation buttons, at the top of the copy, and the offset area around your face graphic. Everything looks needlessly squished.
You might also want to consider breaking your text into columns. It's much too wide to read comfortably.

Overall nice start. One thing I would consider is utilizing your profession...you are an artist like the rest of us! COLORS COLORS, MORE COLORS! The cold gray and blue are very financial and medical. Let your website colors reflect the intensity of your work!
