Slop and Frustration

In a bad frame of mind. Having one of those deadlines looming, work coming out the ying yang, turning out garbage design, and not the least inclination towards working kind of days.

If you've ever experienced this downer type of day, what do you do to alleviate the negative vibes?

Hang out with friends. Go to an art show. Just get out and get your head somewhere else for awhile.

Hey... no one can wake up every day and be creative. That's just unrealistic. Creativity is like anything else. It ebbs and it flows.

Just take this "ebb-time" and do something productive with it. It will start flowing again before you know it.

Hang in there.

Nope. That would be me. I was notorious for draining my father's empties as a child. In retrospect...Yuck.

Go for a walk or a jog, go for drinks with a friend, read a book in a cafe. Take a nice hot shower or bath, lift some weights, watch a movie. Kiss your husband/boyfriend/girlfriend/wife, make yourself a fancy dinner, play with your pets.

Sometimes you need a break, EVEN in the middle of a project.

I'm infamous for returning calls while soaking in the hot tub.

Good work if you can get it. :)

Def do something totally different. I usually try a different creative pursuit like music (I'm a bass player).

Thanks, everyone. I stopped fighting the tide.

But, hey, my bad day seemed pretty small in comparison to this guy:

(ref. The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos. Jan. 14-2008)

Warren Macdonald

Making it to the top of some of the world's tallest peaks is a feat for anyone.

Warren Macdonald has done it without legs.

The Australian-born adventurer's life changed dramatically during a 1997 climbing excursion when a one-ton slab of rock fell on him, trapping him for two days and crushing his lower body. Doctors told him the only way he would survive was to cut off both legs.

Six years later, in February 2003, the British Columbia resident made history, becoming the first double above-knee amputee to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest peak. He has gone on to tackle several of the world's other toughest climbs, including El Capitan, America's tallest cliff face, and the 600-foot-high 'Weeping Wall' frozen waterfall in Alberta.

His story is told in his book 'A Test of Will' and the documentary 'A Second Step.'

I started reading "The Artists Way" by Julia Cameron a while ago. I got maybe three chapters through the book/exercises, though, and kinda went "splat". It did open up some creativity for me, though.

One of the points I liked in the book was that you should treat your creativity like a reservoir. If you use it and use it and use it, you slowly drain your creative reservoir, so you need to do other things in your live that re-fill your creative reservoir. What those things are, are unique to you: listen to music you enjoy, watch movies, have fun with friends, go out, sit in a field and watch the clouds, hit a night club... go to a sporting event, surf the web and look at other artist's works, go to an art museum/show... the list goes on and on because it's just unique to each person.

I like the idea of getting plenty of exercise, too. You take good care of your body physically, it can really assist with your creativity - your blood's flowing well, the physical exercise relieves stress which can block your creativity, etc.

For me, I was actually hitting what I call "Artist's block" when I came across this web site. I was googling "creative inspiration" online (or some kind of keywords like that), and came across this site. The content and news/web links within this site have really, REALLY opened up a lot of inspiration in me.

Good luck to you.
