small embroidery buisness

this logo is for an embroidery business in new orleans - they do custom design embroidery, as well as all of the typical monogram stuff... i basically left the font as is, with the exception of taking the line off of the second t in stitches and adjusting the dot on the i in between the two t's...

what works in this logo, and what doesnt??

thanks

I wish I could offer a more balanced critique (starting with what's good), but I really don't see anything here that works for me. The typeface you selected is difficult to read, particularly for the under-30 set, who may not have studied or used cursive handwriting. (I think this is going to have a real impact on our business in years to come.) The Greek "E" might also confuse some people.

What is the "nola" under the company name? Why is it smaller, and pushed up against the company name? Why isn't it capitalized? Why is the needle after that word and not the company name?

The dots over the "i" in both cases seem too perfectly round and large for the rest of the type. Might be the fault of the font, but many fonts need tweaking once they're out of the box.

The links between the "c" with "k" and "h" look unnatural -- again, a fault of the font.

Overall, the kerning is too tight.

Most importantly, there is nothing "wicked" about the script font. Couldn't you have a little more fun with this?

my guess is "nola" is what people from new orleans say (NO, LA).

I think it's fine. I have no problem with the cursive, tight letters or capital E, it's legible enough. I think the E's should be at the same height as the midline of the H and K. The CK and CH do need a touchup to join better.

The nola is a common abbreviation for New Orleans, but I don't know why it needs to be there. Any business materials are going to have the address on them, you don't need your logo to do it for you. I would remove it and use that neat tail/needle at the end of 'stitches'

It slipped my mind that this was a New Orleans business. Obviously, that's what the "nola" is about. I guess the lower case threw me. I agree that it shouldn't be in the logo.

I still think it's awfully "ordinaire" -- especially for New Orleans.

I like the font (but not the colors).

From success to failure is one step. From failure to success is a long road.

hey thanks for the comments!

yes, nola is as common around here as redbeans & rice :-)

im not positive, but i do believe the actual name is "wicked stitches nola" - she requested nola be included - its not all that uncommon around here i guess, i can think of a few local places that include it in the company name... but i just did a google search and there are other companies around the u.s. with the name "wicked stitches", so maybe it had something to do with that - im not sure on the specifics of that....

ok, so i can see the kerning issues now - thanks for pointing those out!

im going to play around with other fonts - i originally was only using this font for the nola part because of the way the it went into the thread, so i might go back and try more of a not-so-scripty font... personally, i like the font alot :-) however, i cant decide if its too busy for me with the nola popped up in between the words, but the needle & thread didnt work lower down...

what about color? does it work as a 1 color? or go for 2? the color i have up there is like the lsu gold - it prints nice and doesnt blind u like it does on the screen :-)

mara, i appreciate the tough critique - im sorry i couldnt give you something to put on the positive, hopefully you will see some improvements in my future revisions

thx,
angie

Think it reads fine although I'd rather see the needle on the "stitches" and nola in lower case seems wrong since it's short for two proper nouns and you've already set the standard with a capped name. One option might be "NOLA" (or even spelled out - "New Orleans, Louisiana") much smaller and in a totally different font used as a base line under the name...

-------------- NOLA --------------
