So it happened

Hackers managed to break Apple's protection and they managed to run Mac OS X on a non-Apple 2.8Mghz Pentium. Apparently the performance was terrible, but it was working.
Do you think this is gonna escalate to a situation where every other PC will be running OS X now? And if this happens, is that good for Mac community?

I think OS X everywhere would be good.
And in part, I think it is part of Apple's plan that they will release OS X for any PC. I see it as only a matter of time.
I know there a lot of Mac zealots that cringe at the idea, and I do like the idea of being part of a small group, but the bottom line is that Apple is a company. And companies have two priorities: (1) Making Money (2) Pleasing share holders.
Releasing OS X so it could run on any PC would drasticaly increase market share, increase sales, and would definitely make money. Sure, hardware sales are what is important to Apple right now. But the only reason people buy the hardware is because it is necessary to run the software. If people could buy OS X and run it on a fast AMD they built for $1000, they'd do it in a heartbeat. Why buy a $2000+ machine if you can run the same thing on one that costs half the price and is a lot faster?
Apple is in business to make money and please stock holders, and not to do what a small cult of die-hard users think is best.
The move to Intel was in part due to IBM's short-comings, but it ties in rather well with the idea of releasing OS X for x86, as Intel is x86. Some may think it is just a coincidence, but I sure don't.

MS?
they are ***ing their pants if that IS indeed the plan.
As they should!
Vista isn't even out yet, and it's already rumored to be a big dissapointment. With that on their shoulders and the growing idea of a mass-release of OS X - MS must be seriously worried.
All MS does is try to copy OS X. And by the time they release an OS that replicates something OS X does, they are 2+ years behind. After scrapping every idea that would make Vista actually worth the while, I can't see how they plan to be succesful.
I think the failure with Vista, and the increasing popularity of OS X, marks the decline of MS.
It won't happen over night, especially in the corporate realm, but if things continue on the current path, I think OS X has a decent shot at ruling the desktop.

Hmm, out of curiosity, have you seen numbers that indicate this increase in popularity in a quantity that would worry Microsoft?

The increase is in interest
OS X is being discussed EVERYWHERE now, PC magazines, websites, all over.
The switch to intel deffinitely hurt sales, so no one can expect to see that increase right now.
When the Intel boxes come out, especially if OS X for x86 is released to the open, I think it would be quite suprising to many people.
As it stands, 1 out of every 22 desktop computers in the US is a Mac. That's really not that bad, since Mac is not just competing with one hardware manufacturer.
Vista is just XP with more eye-candy and easier access to hidden features that are already in XP. Once people catch on to the fact that MS doesn't do a single inovative thing, they'll ditch. It takes time, but I am positive it will happen.

Sorry, i was fiddling around just now...
No biggie :)
To Jamma:
Steve has said a lot, and then done another thing - even if slightly different. For example, Steve said a Apple would never make a two button mouse. Well, Apple really didn't make a two button mouse, but they made a one button mouse work like a two button mouse lol.
In his Keynote, he also said: "It's all about the software." Hardware isn't what draws people to Apple. It's a nice plus, but not what their most appealing feature is.
Maybe I'm just optimistic or wishfully thinking, but I really hope this happens. I love Apple's hardware design, but if I can build a cheaper custom box that's more powerful and run's OS X, I sure would.
I'd also like to see Apple appeal more to gamers too. That's the one thing I hear a lot of Windows users cite as their reason not to switch. Get games on the Mac, and people would love to switch.

but steve said
Steve said in the wwdc that os x will only be availible for a mac, I very much doubt that they will release it for x86. There will be copies floating around (like there is now) of a x86 version of os x, i was talking to a guy on ¢css irc who had a wintel box with os x running on it (wasnt running that slow either, except no quartz or itunes would run).
Apple will not release os x for x86 boxes its just nothing i can see them doing, if the best thing about a mac is its operating (again according to steve jobs) then whats the point of buying a mac if the os is availible on x86.
osx will only be officially availible on a mac machine.
i think what they will do is
i think what they will do is optimize and make the best out of Mac OS X on a Mac, but it will run fairly well - better than Vista possibly on any PC. That way many will still buy Macs and Apple can make money on selling more OS X copies for PC users. It's a dangreous road, but the price gap between an Apple hardware and a comparable PC hardware isn't wide at all, if there is a gap at all, so I don't think Apple would lose much sales.
Im starting to agree with you
I think you're probably right, or at least a lot closer than what I thought would happen.
If os x does run at peak performance on mac, but have a 'lite' version that runs on x86 then apple have once again given more reason for switchers.
*cant wait for the switch adverts to come back to TV .... even though they have aparently cancelled the new ones :(
lol I was thinking of commercials yesterday
since I havne't seen a non-iPod commercial in FOREVER, I was thinking of how cool it would be to see an OS X commercial on TV.
Then I thought about seeing a commercial advertising OS X for Mac and PC.
Picture this: You see iPhoto, and some iApps running, then it zooms out to someone using their iBook and emailing some pictures or slideshows to someone.
Then you see a close up of the mail icon on a new desktop bounce up, and the red star with a "1" in it appears. A mouse icon goes down to click it, and the camera slowly zooms out to the desktop of someone checking their email, and then seeing the pics/slideshow, or whatever they just received. Then it keeps zooming out so you can eventually see the monitor, the keyboard, etc and that it is a PC running OS X.
Then music from John Lennon kicks in:
"Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one."
Fade to white. Mac OS X Logo. Tagline: "Leopard. For Mac and PC"

I agree, but not entirely.
I agree, but not entirely. Fact is, Apple makes the BEST hardware, bar none. Not even Windows junkies can argue that very well.
Yes, the AMDs are cheaper, possibly faster, but in every other way Apple's hardware designers have the rest of the market beat without a sweat.
I love BOTH the hardware and software.

From the old days of System
From the old days of System 6, I've seen the Mac operating system running on non-Mac platforms.. It was a bit complex and they needed to copy the Macintosh ROM on the new machine. Mac ROM meant they copied them from an old Mac, and once the ROM copy got on loose, many were able to concentrate of porting the binaries of the operating system on other platforms. One easy way of doing it is to emulate the PPC instruction set in a shell, run the ROM, and then run the operating system.
