Sound for Sore Eyes Poster

Hi,
This is an A3 poster for a benefit concert (for the fred hollows foundation- a charity specialising in restoring eyesight to those in poorer countries) coming up in Melbourne soon that my friend asked me to do...you know the type of request- you use a computer at work, so can you design this?... Its ok though, I'm primarily a retoucher and just sort of dipping my toes into design type stuff after many years resisting the pull to graphic design work. So what can I do to make this better? I like the old timey style, I guess i'm just looking to make the whole thing just merrrrge...
cheers

Hi Davage

It all depends on what music the band plays - and what crowd they want to attract.

I've got a soft spot for "ink" drawn graphics and I like the amplifier and globe that you've made a lot. I do think though that you should try to maximize their impact by maybe contrasting them with the choice of type. As it is now the type chosen for the band names and special guest and the headline all mimick the tradition you've aimed for with the drawings and yet not precisely. In my personal eyes this creates visual noise.

Instead you ought to try types that are in a totally different ball park - as a contrast - so that the drawings and the text are easily decoded.

And then again - this is only my two cents.....

I like it a lot. I am not crazy about the font in the "ding dong..." section though. Also, I had no idea what this was for, could you maybe put a brief description on what the foundation stands for on there?

I like the ding-dong-text, the hand writing works nicely with the drawings (if all text on the poster was hand written it would be a problem).

And to echo Pokie, tell us a bit about what it's all about.

Thanks everyone for you comments, its really good to get some input. As for what Fred Hollows is all about, he was an eye surgeon who spent his life in third world countries restoring sight to those who had lost it through disease and other nasties that can rob people of the ability to see. He's fairly well known down here in australia, thats why there's nothing about him on the poster.
if you're in melbourne, make sure you come along to the show! 2nd of December at Ding Dong!
thanks again everyone,
Dave

I have to say I can't tell this is a musical benefit, and I can't tell whom it's for. First, your headline should not have rules around it; it chokes it off from the rest of the page.

Second, can you make it more graphically interesting with some color or better graphics?

Third, to start with, your ad/flyer needs a hierarchy. What's the first thing you want your audience to know, what's the second thing, and so on.

And finally, I recommend that your client get a designer instead of assuming that you can do it simply because you can use a computer. This goes to the heart of the issues facing the design community right now because it's a common misconception. "I can use the software, so I must be a designer."

I'm just venting now. ;)

Hope that helps!
