What are your thoughts on Dreamhost? I've head nothing but horror stories from previous users. Bad service, uptime problems, slow servers, horrible support, etc... The ONLY good thing I've heard is that they're cheap.

Well, we've been running cb on Dreamhost for almost 4 years and we had problems at the beginning. But as soon as I sorted things out it was working fine. The features are great. Very easy to add domains, subdomains, sites, databases, users and manage the whole thing. It is cheap indeed. They are huge, they manage millions of sites, so when something goes wrong many users are affected, that's why they have bad reputation. I think they are great for small to medium users. They are not the right host for big sites. And they are focusing on small to medium users and doing it well.

my experience hasn't been quite as good as ivan's, altho to be fair, it's no worse than the previous hosting company i had.

most of my issues have been email issues. haven't actually lost any email, but i have regular outages where i can't get to email for a couple of hours. mostly webmail issues, but sometimes pop3 as well.

haven't had much downtime for the web site itself, but i don't exactly generate a ton of traffic to the sites i host.

I'm looking for a new web host but dreamhost isn't looking good to be honest...
There are regular occurrences where creativebits.org just doesn't point anywhere for a few hours at a time from the uk, mainly on weekends, but it is an issue.

I got the same email from Dreamhost with 5 invite codes last week. I'm personally very happy hosting there and considered writing a blog post about it but didn't and here's why:

I don't really take on freelance projects, and when I do, I don't offer to host them on my Dreamhost account. I mostly reserve my hosting account for personal projects. However on that account I currently have 9 domains (7 fully hosted), 11 sub-domains and 9 MySQL databases. With all those silly personal project sites, I'm currently using about 2GB of disk space and about 11.5GB/Month of bandwidth. The standard Dreamhost plan provides 500GB of disk space and 5TB (yes, terabytes) of bandwidth.

The main benefit of the coupon code is the space/bandwidth bump because, well, who really pays for 5 or 10 years of hosting at a time...it's a yearly tax write-off. If someone really needs 2000GB of space and 20TB/Month of bandwidth then I guess it's a great deal. Otherwise, I'd wait for another one of their much more generous anniversary deals like the old "777" promo code they offer periodically.
