Springbank Wine Club
caoimghgin (845 pencils) | Fri, 2010-10-22 04:58Springbank Wine Club is a non-profit community organization which hosts wine tastings in a rural area west of Calgary.
A spring is used to create the stem of the wine glass, visually creating a word-play for the name of the organization and demonstrating an unpretentious attitude. The glass is in motion, tilted, as if to happily toast a fellow wine enthusiast.
It's a strong and humorous mark and easily reproduced in 1-color.

risky no conservative xD
need care if feel too much joke

That's me. I like to take risks. ;-)

lol you are a cool guy but the target's spirit could be more conservative in this case.
well, you could add more perspective not so plain to acquire movement.
or add some splashs as Leaky comment.
yes I'm brazilian xD
FUN idea. needs a bit more articulation in the rendering though i think...
Clarification?
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
dunno. it just feels like everything is really heavy and i dont feel the "bounce"
i dont know if there needs to me more thick/thin contrast in the glass or more action in the wine. or maybe some lines to indicate the motion...
i guess it just feels too iconic and could use a bit more illustrative flair...
I'm a big fan of iconic.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
i am as well. but i think in this case. the icon needs a little more "activity" (or "fun") to really sell the concept...
I used to have a toy frog that you compressed onto a spring, it had a sucker at the base, press it down and wait... Sometimes it would take seconds, others it would take what felt like hours, but then... BOING!!!! It would jump off the table.
A bit like this
but a frog.
I loved that toy, but I have always been easily amused.
This logo reminded me of that.
Meaningless nostalgia over.

This seems way too static, I'm not feeling the bouncy, springy action. I would have some of the wine spilling out kinda like this: http://www.bradfitzpatrick.com/store/images/products/fb031-wine-glass-spilling.jpg
Heck, you might not even need action lines to indicate springyness, but you might want to change the curve of the glass, to be more curved in sone direction, as opposed to going left then curving back to the right.

Hmmm.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
i dont know that you need spilling wine. but at least try making the weight / contour of the glass v wine a little less constant
Meh, I would assume that if you had wine in a glass, and it was going back and forth on a spring, some of it would spill. Even without action lines, it would imply that the glass is moving. RIght now the glass looks only slightly titled, and the wine backs that up. Keep the glass tilted the way it is there, but with wine flying out, and it seems like it's in the middle of it's springing action, implying that it's still in motion.
Hope that makes sense.

As well as adding action, the splash would add to the fun factor.
If this group is laid back and loves wine, getting a little tipsy must be part of the attraction. Where drink is involved spillage occurs.

Like it very much!
i wonder, it may overcomplicate the image. but what if we could see the opening of the glass? or some kind of foreshortening?
maybe thats whats bothering me. i sense leaning in the coil. yet the glass is straight on.
This mark is receiving a suprising amount of not-entirely-positive critiques and I'm a bit shocked! I'll have to sleep on the comments and come back to it with fresh eyes.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
OHHHH I SEEE!
The playfulness of spring illustration is too jarring against the seriousness of the wine glass.
Match the styles.
Work on the curve.
Got it.
Thanks!

i dont think anyone has said anything "not-entirely-positive". personally, i LOVE your start. and thats why ive been so active in commenting.
what i find here on the site is that posts get traffic for two reasons:
1. the work is utterly horrible. and people want to either educate OR discourage the OP from wasting their time (or continuing in mucking up the industry)
2. the work is really good and people want to either get involved or see how it turns out.
your posts typically fall into the second category
this is a HORRIBLE quick rendering based on a screen grab of your image. but i hope its a decent representation of what im talking about...
Concept is 200%, out come is 50%
Want more... less complexity, simplicity, animation-ity
Thanks!

isn't there nor "S" initial to look less like an icon?
yes I'm brazilian xD
Nonono. I'm still working! Lets just consider that a bookmark for the idea. ;-)
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
I think you should make the sprin molded into the glass and base to make it look more like the actual stem of the wine glass. and a little sloshing action please.
i like the idea and all, i think is fun but i was wandering if that is the type of spring that is better suited for this logo i mean it could be the other meaning of spring dont you think
well anyways it was just a thought.
What is this I don't even...

He means as in the season Spring.
Here's the status so far.
It's been uploaded to stocklogos.com and I haven't had a chance to play with it.
Surprisingly, after upload last Friday, the mark has received 295 views and has been rated 4.999 out of 5 stars (Not a common thing on the site). It's also been 'favorited' by two members and, so far, it figures prominently on the 'Most Popular' section of the site.

So, I'm a little hesitant to change anything at this point especially since client hasn't logged in for a while.
Wanted to say thanks for your critiques, as always. I'm a 'production-guy' and without a cadre of 'creatives' to bounce ideas off of. That means all of you are a very important part of my design process and I wanted you to know I appreciate it very much.

Got to say, I'm a little dissappointed to not see the changes suggested here. Nonetheless, if the logo has gotten rave reviews and the client is happy, that's all that matters.
Good work, you've got a great portfolio.

Thanks Leaky,
Yeah, I hate it when critiques aren't implemented so I thought I should explain myself.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Love the concept. Don't think you need splashes just because it's on a spring because that would entirely depend on the amount of movement. For me the spring looks like it has been twisted out of shape and wouldn't support the glass with the wine. It looks like it could break or fall over from being off balance. Here's a rough concept. Too literal? Of course the springs would need to curve to show bend, and wine would be shaped differently in the two screened placements.
what youre suggesting here looks more like a doorstop spring...
I fear we getting into the territory of designers critiquing the mark THEY would have designed rather than critiquing the mark that is designed.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
My apologies, just thought I was being helpful with a quick sketch. My critique of your mark as stated before is that the spring looks bent, twisted and broken and like it doesn't have the strength to support the glass with wine. It looks like it is going to fall over, and communicates off balance and possibly hints at drunkenness. The spring also looks like the filament in a cartoon light bulb. Great concept. Good luck!!
Excellent point. Physics sometimes plays a role in any successful illustration or logo. Be it how light reflects off or a surface or reflections in water. Soemtimes we can afford to play with these concepts though, but your point remains valid nonetheless.

I don't know... this concept create me a feeling of "drunkard" not so funny as intended to be... and maybe related with the phisics flaw...
